1) The Democrats were elected on promises to fix the economy and have failed to do. While obviously no one could fix all of the major economic problems facing the US in a scant two years, the public's reaction here isn't quite as unreasonable as some would imply as the Democrats made a lot of unrealistic promises, such as Obama stating unemployment would never rise above 8% if the stimulus passed, and are now going to be held to account for them.
2) The leftmost portion Democratic base is demoralized due to have completely unrealistic expectations of what the Democrats would be able to accomplish. For example, they saw the raw number of seats that the Democrats held in the House and assumed they'd be able to pass any extremely left-leaning measure they wanted to, whereas the reality was that the more moderate Blue Dog coalition made up such a large portion of their majority, that nothing could pass without getting a majority of them to sign onto it. A lot of that far-left portion is simply going to stay home and not vote now.
