Clerk won't give gay couple marriage license

She's an elected official not a regular employee.

yes, and? They need to fire her, and let her fight it out in court, or they need to make the law in the state such that other clerks can issue the licenses to allow for reasonable accomodation.

She should not be in jail.

Do you think she should be in jail, yes or no?

She is a martyr, she is in jail, that is what makes her one. She is in jail for failing to violate her conscience and for her religious beliefs.

Nope. She is in jail for failing to do the job she was paid for. Last time I checked, resigning is a possibility.

You guys are acting as if she is some kind of martyr, which is ridiculous. No one is forcing her to work for an institutions that does something she disagrees with. She has no real principles, she wants to have her cake and eat it too. She wants their money, but refuse to do the job she is assigned to do. Not to mention that she is not exactly a beacon of the sanctity of marriage (as if that is a factor in marriage in a purely secular form anyway) herself, last time I checked she has married 4 times, 3 divorces.

Let me rephrase the last thing I wrote as a question:

Would you support her if she was a conservative Muslim who refused to issue a marriage certificate to a non-Muslim man and a Muslim woman?

If not, you are simply a hypocrite. The US is not a Christian theocracy, appealing to church laws or biblical principles is irrelevant. The only thing that matters for a person who wants to earn their living off of a government institution is to carry it out according to the laws of the secular government.

I agree with you completely.

However, it appears chrys would support the Muslim scenario:

Are you okay with a government official being paid $80,000 a year for a job she refuses to do?

yes if it is based on religious freedom

I disagree, she has rights too and the right to reasonable accommodation and not being forced to violate her beliefs are one of them.

I would go to jail too rather than violate my conscience before God.

Her right to hate ends when it infringes on the rights of others

If she'd resigned from her elected position saying she couldn't carry out her legal duties because of her religious beliefs, I would have respected her decision.

She has a constitutional right to freedom of religion and reasonable accommodation for such, see the constitution and the law from EEOC on reasonable accommodation (already posted, look back) She cannot be compelled to act against her religion.

When you work for someone, do you get to make up your own rules? No, you follow the rules your employer put in place. Or you get fired. The govt is her employer. If she doesn't like what they make her do, she can quit her job and get a new one.

Some jobs have dress codes that require Muslim women to not wear a burka. Is this something you are upset about?

Im real sure shes more worried about Gods respect than yours, but thanks for playing.

You just can't get past your personal animosity towards me and stick to the argument itself, can you?

If you can't deal with what I have to add to the discussion, you can always put me on ignore.

No, she's in jail for not doing her job that she swore an oath to do.
Again, this is not a regular employee, this is an elected, sworn, official.
Like a Mayor or a Sheriff.

I think she should resign, if she won't then she should be in jail until she resigns or complies.

I see, so when atheists refused to pray at school, they should have been jailed for it till they complied, and you would have supported it, got it.

Wow, so much hypocrisy.

:chuckle: Last I heard, the atheists at school weren't elected officials whose salaries are paid by the taxpayers.

Wow, so much hypocrisy.

Did the Atheists swear an oath to uphold the law and did the law compel them to pray?
