This is a fine example of quote mining. While those numbers to appear in the book "homosexualites" by Alan Bell and Martin Weinberg it was part to of a subset of interviews not of gays in general but of a handful of men who habitually frequented bathhouses in the mid 1970's.
as Alan Bell wrote "Given the variety of circumstances which discourage homosexuals from participating in research studies, it is unlikely that any investigator will ever be in a position to say that this or that is true of a given percentage of all homosexuals.”
This one is famous. This claim apparently first appeared in "Health Risks of Gay Sex" By John Diggs. What made it famous is the fact that this claim exists no where in the study but despite that it is one of the most often claimed "fact" used by anti-gay groups. Van de Ven's actual finding was "homosexual men had either 1 (28.5%)or between 2-5 (44.9%) partners and (23.9%) had had between 5 and 10 partners ever.”
Allow me to do the math for you - according to Van de Ven 97.3 % of all the gay men he surveyed had less than 10 sexual partners in their lifetime. So where did the ridiculous numbers Daily published come from? No one knows.
This was a challenge to look up as Mr Slick (what an ironic name) didn't include the name of the study or its author just a dead link. But have no fear I found it. This comes from "Health Risks of Gay Sex" By John Diggs. (what an amazing coincidence) Here Diggs attributes the number to Bell and Weinstien...even though they don't match any of their numbers.
Cutting to the chase - here is the Laumann book and you can go to page 216 and read it for yourself.
