Praise the Lord!

For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
John 1:17
Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 5:20-21

Sunday Morning Praise

Grace Greater Than Our Sin

Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt!
Yonder on Calvary’s mount out-poured,
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilled.

Sin and despair, like the sea waves cold,
Threaten the soul with infinite loss;
Grace that is greater, yes, grace untold,
Points to the refuge, the mighty cross.

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide.
What can avail to wash it away?
Look! There is flowing a crimson tide,
Brighter than snow you may be today.

Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,
Freely bestowed on all who believe!
You that are longing to see His face,
Will you this moment His grace receive?

Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that will pardon and cleanse within;
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that is greater than all our sin.

:poly:

I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.
Psalm 9:2

I Will Ever Sing Thy Praises

I will ever sing Thy praises, mighty God and gracious King;
Loud my heart its tribute raises, and to Thee my psalms I sing;
Thou art King of all creation, every land and every nation;
“Thousand, thousand thanks to Thee, mighty God,” my song shall be!

Praise the Lord!

I will cause showers to come down in their season; there shall be showers of blessing.
Ezekiel 34:26

Showers and Sunshine

“The fruitful life seeks showers as well as sunshine.”
Anonymous

The landscape, brown and sere beneath the sun,
Needs but the cloud to lift it into life;
The dews may damp the leaves of tree and flower,
But it requires the cloud-distilled shower
To bring rich verdure to the lifeless life.

Ah, how like this, the landscape of a life:
Dews of trial fall like incense, rich and sweet;
But bearing little in the crystal tray
Like nymphs of night, dews lift at break of day
And transient impress leave, like lips that meet.

But clouds of trials, bearing burdens rare,
Leave in the soul, a moisture settled deep:
Life kindles by the magic law of God;
And where before the thirsty camel trod,
There richest beauties to life’s landscape leap.

Then read thou in each cloud that comes to thee
The words of Paul, in letters large and clear:
So shall those clouds thy soul with blessing feed,
And with a constant trust as thou dost read,
All things together work for good. Fret not, nor fear!

A Symphony of One

Make us a symphony of One,
Focused upon One conductor,
Tuned to One concert pitch,
Submitted to One tempo.

Content to play One part,
Perfected to One sound,
Resulting in One purpose
The praise of our Composer.

Free us from solo vain glory,
Content us to watch as we rest;
Ready to play our one measure,
Trusting our Maestro knows best.

Teach us love’s concert ambition,
Cleanse us from comparing pride;
Put to death vain competition,
Let harmony’s fruit now abide.

That Thou blessed Lord may have pleasure,
Diverse yet through unity one,
Accomplishing Your One true treasure,
The summation of all in Your Son.

Praise the Lord!

Remember, O LORD, Your tender mercies and Your lovingkindnesses,
For they are from of old.

Psalm 25:6
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the Father of mercies and God of all comfort.

2 Corinthians 1:3

:poly:

Father of Mercies

Father of mercies, in Thy Word what endless glory shines!
Forever be Thy Name adored for these celestial lines.
Here may the wretched sons of want exhaustless riches find;
Riches above what earth can grant, and lasting as the mind.

Here the fair tree of knowledge grows and yields a free repast;
And richer fruits than nature shows invite the longing taste.
Amidst these gloomy wilds below, when dark and sad we stray,
Here beams of Heaven relieve our woe, and guide to endless day.

Here springs of consolation rise to cheer the fainting mind,
And thirsty souls receive supplies, and sweet refreshment find.
Here the Redeemer’s welcome voice spreads heavenly peace around
And life and everlasting joys attend the blissful sound.

Oh, may these hallowed pages be our joy by day and night,
And still new beauties may we see, and still increasing light.
Divine Instructor, gracious Lord, O grant our fervent prayer,
Teach us to love Thy sacred Word, and view the Savior there.

Do not withhold Your tender mercies from me, O LORD;
Let Your lovingkindness and Your truth continually preserve me.

Psalm 40:11

:poly:

Thy Tender Mercies, O My Lord

Thy tender mercies, O my Lord,
Withhold not, I implore;
But let Thy kindness and Thy truth
Preserve me evermore.
For countless ills have compassed me,
My sinful deeds arise;
Yea, they have overtaken me;
I dare not raise my eyes.

My sins are more than I can count,
My heart has failed for grief;
Be pleased, O Lord, to rescue me,
O haste to my relief.
Be those who seek to hurt my soul
Dismayed and put to flight,
And they themselves be put to shame
Who in my woe delight.

Let all who seek Thee now rejoice,
Yea, glad in Thee abide,
And, loving Thy salvation, say,
The Lord be magnified.
My lowly state and bitter need
The Lord has not forgot;
Thou art my Savior and my help,
Come, Lord, and tarry not.

Praise the Lord!

Our fathers have told us, the deeds You did in their days, in days of old.
Psalm 44:1

:poly:

Our Nation, God, Its Heart To Thee Upraiseth

Our nation, God, its heart to Thee upraiseth,
O Lord, the nation bows before Thy face:
With high thanksgiving, Thee Thy glad church praiseth,
Our strength Thy Spir’t, our trust and hope Thy grace.
Unto great honor, glory undeserved,
Hast Thou exalted us, and drawn Thee nigh:
Nor, from Thy judgments, when our feet had swervèd,
Didst Thou forsake, nor leave us, Lord most high.

In Thee our fathers trusted, and were savèd,
In Thee destroyèd thrones of tyrants proud:
From ancient bondage freed the poor enslavèd;
To sow Thy truth poured out their saintly blood.
Us now, we pray, O God, in anger scorn not,
Nor to vainglorying leave, nor brutish sense
In time of trouble Thy face from us turn not,
Who art our rock, our stately sure defense.

Unto our minds give freedom and uprightness;
Let strengthened courage lead o’er land and wave,
To our souls’ armor grant celestial brightness,
Joy to our hearts, and faith beyond the grave.
Our plenteous nation still in power extending,
Increase our joy, uphold us by Thy Word:
Beauty and wisdom all our ways attending,
Good will to man and peace through Christ our Lord.

Deuteronomy 33:13

The city was pure gold, like clear glass.
Revelation 21:18

:poly:

There’s a Beautiful City

There’s a beautiful city that lies far away
From the earth with its burden of tears,
Where the night never enters, but shadowless day
Shines on through eternity’s years.

From the shadows are lifted our sorrowful eyes
To the hills where the angels have trod,
And our hearts ever yearn for our home in the skies,
Our home in the garden of God.

And there all of our sorrows shall fade as a dream
As we enter the country of rest,
While before us in heavenly beauty shall gleam,
The mansions prepared for the blest.

O beautiful city, city of gold;
O beautiful city, treasures untold;
O beautiful city, city of gold;
When shall I rest in that beautiful city of gold?

Sunday Morning Praise

O Thou Who Turnest Into Morning

O Thou who turnest into morning
The shadows of the passing night,
Again to conscious life returning,
We bless Thee for the newborn light.

Grant us that light, to all unfailing
Who seek to do Thy perfect will,
That we, o’er doubt and fear prevailing,
May trust Thy good above all ill;

That we may offer Thee thanksgiving
Beyond our prayers and songs that rise
In greater faithfulness of living,
In deeper love through sacrifice.

But the men marvelled, saying, what manner of man is this,
that even the winds and the sea obey him!

Matthew 8:27

:poly:

Behold What Manner Of Man Is This

Behold what manner of man is this who stills the raging sea.
He heals the sick, the lame, the halt, and makes the blind to see.
He opens all the prison doors and sets the captives free.
Behold what manner of Man is this, what manner of man is He?

Behold what manner of man is this, who spake to the woman at the well.
Everlasting life I will give to thee, far richer than man can tell
And whosoever shall drink of the well shall live eternally.
Behold what manner of man is this, what manner of man is He?

Behold what manner of man is this, who healed the lame and halt,
Who says “Thy sins be forgiven thee, take up thy bed and walk.”
He stands as the mighty healer now and cries “Come unto me.”
Behold what manner of man is this what manner of man is He?

Behold what manner of man is this who stands between God and man,
His eyes are as a flame of fire seven stars are in His hand,
John saw Him in the seven churches as the sun in brilliancy,
Behold what manner of man is this, what manner of man is He?

Behold what manner of man is this, who sits on His heavenly throne,
He rules and reigns from heaven above His beloved and His own.
He’s the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David is He,
Behold what manner of man is this, what manner of man is He?

He is the Lord of Glory, He is the great “I AM”
The Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End.
His name is Wonderful, the Prince of Peace is He
He’s the everlasting Father Throughout eternity.

Psalm 9:1
Many, O LORD my God, are Your wonderful works which You have done;

Psalm 40:5

Psalm 118:23

How Often

How often, Lord, our grateful eyes
Have seen what Thou hast done,
How often does Thy love surprise
From dawn to set of sun.

How often has a gracious rain
On Thine inheritance,
When it was weary, wrought again
An inward radiance.

Thou Who upon the heavens dost ride,
What miracle of love Brings
Thee more swiftly to our side
Than even thought can move?

Our love is like a little pool,
Thy love is like the sea,
O beautiful, O wonderful,
How noble Love can be.

Praise the Lord!

The same came therefore to Philip…saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.
John 12:21

:poly:

We Would See Jesus

We would see Jesus; for the shadows lengthen
Across this little landscape of our life;
We would see Jesus, our weak faith to strengthen
For the last weariness, the final strife.
We would see Jesus, the great rock Foundation
Whereon our feet were set with sovereign grace;
Nor life nor death, with all their agitation,
Can thence remove us, if we see His face.

We would see Jesus; other lights are paling,
Which for long years we have rejoiced to see;
The blessings of our pilgrimage are failing;
We would not mourn them, for we go to Thee.
We would see Jesus; yet the spirit lingers
Round the dear objects it has loved so long,
And earth from earth can scarce unclasp its fingers;
Our love to Thee makes not this love less strong.

We would see Jesus: sense is all too binding,
And heaven appears too dim, too far away;
We would see Thee, Thyself our hearts reminding
What Thou hast suffered, our great debt to pay.
We would see Jesus: this is all we’re needing;
Strength, joy, and willingness come with the sight;
We would see Jesus, dying, risen, pleading;
Then welcome day, and farewell mortal night.

We love Him because He first loved us.
1 John 4:19

:poly:

Because He First Loved Me

I’m trusting, only trusting in Jesus day by day:
I feel His presence nearer, while pressing on my way;
My soul is full of glory, and this my song shall be:
I love my blessed Saviour, because He first loved me.

I’m trusting, only trusting in Jesus ev’ry hour,
Who saves me by His mercy, and keeps me by His power;
I’ll publish His salvation wherever I may be:
With all my heart I love Him, because He first loved me.

I’m trusting, only trusting my Saviour’s hand to guide,
I know His grace sufficient, and ask for naught beside;
My soul is on the mountain, my home beyond the sea:
O bless the Lord! I love Him, because He first loved me.

Because He first loved me, I love Him, I trust Him,
Wherever I may be, my soul is full of glory,
I sing because I’m free; I love my blessed Saviour,
Because He first loved me, I love Him, I trust Him.

Praise the Lord!

There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.
Hebrews 4:9

:poly:

Lord, I Believe a Rest Remains

Lord, I believe a rest remains to all thy people known;
A rest where pure enjoyment reigns, and thou art loved alone.
A rest where all our soul’s desire is fixed on things above;
Where doubt, and pain, and fear expire, cast out by perfect love.
From every evil motion freed, the Son hath made us free,
On all the powers of hell we tread, in glorious liberty.

Safe in the way of life, above death, earth, and dread we rise;
We find, when perfect in love, our long-sought paradise.
O that I now the rest might know, believe, and enter in!
Now, Savior, now the power bestow, and let me cease from sin!
Remove this hardness from my heart, this unbelief remove;
To me the rest of faith impart, the Sabbath of thy love.

Come, O Savior, come away, upon my soul descend
No longer from thy creature stay, my Author and my End.
The bliss thou hast for me prepared no longer be delay’d;
Come, my exceeding great reward, for whom I first was made.
Come, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, and seal me thine abode!
Let all I am in thee be lost, let all be lost in God.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. Isaiah 43:2-3

:poly:

Not Down, But Through

“When Thou passest through the waters,”
Deep the waves may be and cold,
But Jehovah is our refuge,
And his promise is our hold;
For the Lord himself has said it,
He, the faithful God and true;
“When you come to the waters
You will not go down, but through.”

Seas of sorrow, Seas of trial,
Bitter anguish, fiercest pain,
Rolling surges of temptation
Sweeping over heart and soul...
They will never overflow us
For we know His work is true;
All His waves and all His billows
He will lead us safely through.

Threatening breakers of destruction,
Doubt’s insidious undertow,
Will not sink us, will not drag us
Out to ocean depths of woe;
For His promise will sustain us,
Praise the Lord, whose word is true!
We will not go down, or under,
For He says, “You will pass through.”

That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:17-19

:poly:

Sunday Morning Praise

The Love of Christ

How broad is Christ's love?
Oh, as broad as man's trespass,
As wide as the need of the world can be;
And yet to the need of one soul it can narrow
He came to the world and He came to me.

How long is Christ's love?
Without end or beginning,
Eternal as God and His life it must be,
For, to everlasting as from everlasting
He loveth the world and He loveth me.

How deep is Christ's love?
Oh, as deep as man's sinning.
As low as the uttermost vileness can be;
In the fathomless gulf of the Father's forsaking
He died for the world and He died for me.

How high is Christ's love?
It is high as the heavens,
As high as the throne of His glory must be;
And yet from that height He hath stooped to redeem us
He so loved the world and He so loved me.

How great is Christ's love?
Oh, it passeth all knowledge,
No man's comprehension its measure can be;
It filleth the world, yet each heart may contain it
He so loves the world and He so loves me.

Praise the Lord!

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
Romans 8:35

:poly:

The Love of God

The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star, and reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled, and pardoned from his sin.

When years of time shall pass away, and earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,
When men, who here refuse to pray, on rocks and hills and mountains call,
God’s love so sure, shall still endure, all measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race The saints’ and angels’ song.

Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above, would drain the ocean dry.
Nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky.

O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure!
The saints’ and angels’ song.

Colossians 3:15

The Blessings That Remain

There are loved ones who are missing from the fireside and the feast;
There are faces that have vanished, there are voices that have ceased;
But we know they passed forever from our mortal grief and pain,
And we thank Thee, O our Father, for the blessings that remain.

Thankful, oh, Thankful, that their love once blessed us here,
That so long they walked beside us, sharing every smile and tear;
For the joy the past has brought us, but can never take away,
For the sweet and gracious memories growing dearer every day.

For the faith that keeps us patient looking at the things unseen,
Knowing Spring shall follow Winter and the earth again be green,
For the hope of that glad meeting far from mortal grief and pain -
We thank Thee, Oh our Father, for the blessings that remain.

For the love that still is left us, for the friends who hold us dear,
For the lives that yet may need us, for their guidance and their cheer,
For the work that waits our doing, for the help we can bestow,
For the care that watches o'er us wheresoe'er our steps my go.

For the simple joys of living, for the sunshine and the breeze,
For the beauty of the flowers and the laden orchard trees,
For the night and for the starlight, for the rainbow and the rain,
Thankful, O our Father, for the blessings that remain.
