Example. James 2:8 KJV - 8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
Leviticus 19:17-18 KJV
(17)
Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.
(18)
Thou shalt not avenge,
nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people,
but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.
Matthew 5:44-45 KJV
(44) But I say unto you,
Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
(45)
That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
Romans 13:9 KJV
(9) For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment,
it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Galatians 5:13-14 KJV
(13) For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
(14)
For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
James 2:8 KJV
(8)
If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
John 13:34-35 KJV
(34)
A new commandment I give unto you,
That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
(35) By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples,
if ye have love one to another.
1 John 2:7-10 KJV
(7) Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
(8)
Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
(9) He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
(10)
He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
2 John 1:5-6 KJV
(5) And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning,
that we love one another.
(6) And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
I would say that although that commandment was the solid intent of both the old covenant (Leviticus 19) it was also the commandment of our Christ for our new covenant. As John tells us, it was an
old commandment but it is also a
new commandment. The former law may be abolished but this commandment was made new, and if understood
and truly believed it renders the Old Covenant obsolete.
