Could You Train Yourself To Enjoy...

that's your subjective impression of a specific experience

i'm not interested in your subjective opinions :idunno:

I'm not interested in yours either and that's all you're bringing to the table here. Once again, I'm not the one insisting that other people can choose or will themselves to enjoy something here.

Right. That's pretty important.

I linked to a psych article a few pages back that agrees with you on that.

Do you not think it would have been easier for me to sit through hours of commercial radio at work if it was just as easy as you suggest? You think I "chose" to be bored and irritated by it?

Hmm, can this same "logic" be applied to stubbing a toe, having a migraine, watching paint dry? You have to want to derive enjoyment from something that is anything but?

Probably not.

But there's some major apples and oranges going on there, man.

You already enjoy music. You are therefore capable of liking multiple types of music,
You (presumably) do not enjoy pain.

If you did enjoy pain, then you'd probably be capable of enjoying certain types of it (like stubbing a toe).

would you enjoy self-flagellation?

there are those who do

they weren't born loving pain, they learned to associate it with ecstatic release

iow, they chose to enjoy it

I don't know; I wasn't there.

What did you do, if anything, to try to change your opinion of it?

I do enjoy multiple genres of music, even random sounds and timbres if there's something about it that catches the attention, none of it's a choice. I'm not capable of 'enjoying' cheesy schmaltz aka 'muzak' as there's just nothing whatsoever interesting about it for me.

I don't enjoy pain and listening to Beyonce et al was enough without stubbing my toe as well...

I've heard many parents (including my own) say to children, "Oh for goodness sake, will you please stop whining and try to enjoy yourself?"

Ok, if you're going to jump on SOD's troll posts then forget it GJ. Else go play a game of chess with yourself and see who wins...

It wasn't an 'opinion', it simply bored me. I didn't "formulate an opinion" of 'The Rite' when it grabbed me by the same token...

Come on - you saying that pop music is boring is a statement of opinion.
Let's not even bother arguing that.

Should I rephrase my previous question?
What did you do, if anything, to try to change your level of enjoyment of pop music?

Well of course it is. Plenty of people enjoy songs that bore me to bits. I didn't ask or "choose" to be drawn to music that isn't standard 'pop', yet you're the one insisting that I can 'choose' to like music that's as interesting to me as looking at an ashtray for three hours...

Well, there was no enjoyment to start with so it was boredom limitation methods. Seriously dude, if this is going to be repeatedly the extent of your 'argument' then I question as to whether you can really understand what it's like to be absolutely gripped by a piece of music that is utterly out of your control.

Huh?

I wasn't co-trolling, man.
I have no interest in doing that.

Then do me a favour and don't bother jumping on what was obviously a troll post to me, you must have surely seen that. He isn't getting traction with his usual obsession (TH) as he's on ignore and he now is with me until after new year. Doser isn't the most banned poster on here overall for nothing.

I don't see what one scenario has to do with the other.

I automatically enjoyed peanut butter, since childhood.
Did that stop me from acquiring a taste for beer?
