"Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair it is a disgrace to him, but that if a woman has long hair it is her glory? For her hair is given to her as a covering."(1 Corinthians 11:13-15)

"But if evidences of virginity are not found for the young woman, then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones..." (Deuteronomy 22:20,21)

"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live"( Exod. 22:18)

"Christians" also burned witches at the stake, owned slaves, killed non-virgins, initiated Crusades, conducted inquisitions, and murdered in the name of God.

Spanking or otherwise punishing a child in anger is a rotten idea, no way around that.

Please go ahead and cut and paste anywhere I have said you should spank in anger. Do it now or get some glasses and read my post more carefully

Would someone help me understand why fundamentalists such as yourselves choose to turn aside the inspiration of

-spiritual giants (like Abraham Lincoln, Nobel Peace Prize Recipient Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu, etc,),

-other Christian professionals (among them Churches Network For Non-Violence, Parenting In Jesus' Footsteps, etc),

-professionals at large (like American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Global Initiative To End All Corporal Punishment of Children, The United Nations Convention On the Rights of the Child, etc.)

-other biblical verses, such as:

"When a slave owner strikes a male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies immediately, the owner shall be punished. But if the slave survives a day or two, there is no punishment; for the slave is the owner's property (Exod. 21:20-21)

in favor of your own selective literalism?

If you choose to respond, please use civil language (no insults, foul language, television clips, please). Just trying to understand.

You might have chased down the liberal exception made the norm idea, but your comment on scripture hardly supports your argument. Slave dies immediately, or it is just damaging one’s property?

Now look, you are a newbie and hardly in a position to tell anyone how to respond. Do you understand my point?

I couldn't disagree more.

I agree with God that a spanking should be done with some type of instrument (we like to use a wooden spoon) and it should be painful (that is the mechanism that trains).

If the spankings are not painful you will end up spanking your kids (or disciplining them) way more than you should.

Spank correctly and you wont need to spank much at all!

I do not think my kids ever cried once from the pain of spanking, it is the fear calling attention. I would say, “stop it or you’re getting a paddling and they would stop in their tracks. I never had to spank them once they could understand my verbal response to disruptive or bad behavior

  1. I turn aside those who are not God for His word.
  2. I also know the difference between a child and a slave.
  3. But beyond that, if I strike a child so hard he dies I should be punished. With death.
  4. However, as I mentioned, there is a difference between a child and a slave [adult]. And if I were to beat a child like that, even if they survived, I should be punished with death.

Spanking isn't meant to lead children to honorable practices. It's to lead them away from dishonorable ones.

"Children ought to be lead to honorable practices by means of encouragement and reasoning, and most certainly not by blows and ill treatment"
Plutarch, circa 45-120 CR, "The Education of Children," vol. I, Moralia, Ancient Greece.

Plutarch goes on to say that he is talking about the sort of blows that lead children to "shudder at their tasks", however a child who has had a spanking is generally a happy child, both absolved of their guilt and eager for the re-established relationship. Either Plutarch was referring to excessive abuse, or he was nescient of the difference.

Perhaps you are too?

Child buttock-battering vs discipline

Child buttock-battering vs discipline

Plutarch goes on to say that he is talking about the sort of blows that lead children to "shudder at their tasks", however a child who has had a spanking is generally a happy child, both absolved of their guilt and eager for the re-established relationship. Either Plutarch was referring to excessive abuse, or he was nescient of the difference.

Perhaps you are too?

Are you a scholar on the subject? Because the vast majority of them would disagree with you.

"Spanking" is a euphemism for child buttock-battering.

I've listed plenty of credible professionals, professional associations, Christians, historical figures etc, all of whom confirm child buttock-battering as an unhealthy, indecent and illegitimate form of punishment.

Maybe a few more to strengthen the voice of your conscience?

"I have always been an advocate for the total abolition of corporal punishment and I believe the connection with pornography that is so oriented has its roots in our tradition of beating children."
Gordon Moyes, D.D., Pastor, Superintendent of the Wesley Central Mission, Sydney, Australia.1980

"Spankings may have a negative impact on sex development. Because of the proximity of the sex organs, a child may get sexually aroused when spanked. Or he may so enjoy the making up that follows the punishment that he will seek suffering as a prelude to love. There are many adult couples who seem to need a good fight before a good night."
Dr. Haim G. Ginott, child psychologist. Between Parent and Child (1966)

"Corporal punishment of children actually interferes with the process of learning and with their optimal development as socially responsible adults. We feel it is important for public health workers, teachers, and others concerned for the emotional and physical health of children and youth to support the adoption of methods for the achievement of self-control and responsible behavior in children and adolescents."
Daniel F. Whiteside, Assistant Surgeon General, Department of Health and Human Services, 1990.

"Infliction of pain, however minor, is not a desirable method of communicating with children"
American Medical Association, House of Delegates, 1985

In fact, the US was the only United Nations member that did not ratify The Convention on the Rights of the Child.
