There was a history of blacks being portrayed as less than human, so yes: It's racist.
Treating anyone as subhuman is wrong, but you're using that to excuse and to mitigate what you're trying to do here, which is to pretend that portraying Blacks as monkeys isn't racist. It's racist.
Why? They teach we came from animals no? Darwin believed blacks
less evolved and closer to apes than whites. At any rate if we evolved, why is it bad to show an ancestor?

Not only that, they seem to think the slaves should be grateful for a place to sleep and something to eat - what's a few rapes and beatings and a complete loss of liberty and the tearing apart of families as they were bought and sold at will? Because they got somewhere to sleep?!

American slavery is not the only slavery- Africans enslaved themselves, and plenty of white people were slaves.
Every culture, in fact, suffered slavery.
Slavery is not new news, it has existed throughout all history- but to hinge on it a century and half later is simply lame.

Sometimes, the slave owner or his overseer (his middle man) didn't extend the energy to beat or whip their slave; they would mutilate him in such a way as to stop the behavior, but still allow the slave to do the grueling work in the fields with his mutilated body as a visible warning to the other slaves, and as a reminder to himself to stay in line.
A 1937 photograph of Wes Brady, a former slave. Born around 1850, Brady had been owned by a Marshall, Texas, farmer before emancipation. As a young boy he worked the fields, picking cotton. He recalled
“The rows was a mile long and no matter how much grass was in them, if you leaves one sprig on your row they beats you nearly to death.”
Slaves weren't house servants who got slapped across the face in disgust, or even dogs who got kicked in frustration. Servants and dogs had the good life compared to slaves. Slaves were whipped daily; it wasn't a special occasion or just a form of punishment for some ill-perceived wrongdoing, such as a slave looking "the wrong way" at an non-slave. Beatings, whippings and other torture were a form of mind and body control, a way to weaken the spirit of the slaves, to keep the slaves down and on the plantation.
Below, this is a famous photo of a runaway slave and his whipping scars from multiple whippings:
As this famous photograph suggests, photography was capable of communicating powerful ideas about the so-called “peculiar institution”—ideas that ultimately undermined the prevailing notion that slavery was a benign tradition.
Below, these are a vintage drawing and a modern-day photograph of another instrument of torture used on slaves:
"Instrument of Torture used by Slaveholders". Sent to Harper's Weekly by a sergeant in the Union Army, this sketch "of an instrument of torture" used in Missouri "to punish their negroes" includes the following descriptive comments: "It was securely riveted [around the neck] and required an hour's filing before it could be removed. This proved to be a very painful operation to the poor 'contraband'; for his neck was so snugly incased by the iron band . . . . The negro stated that he had worn it two months . . . . The form of the instrument prevented him from lying down and taking his rest at night; and its weight and close fit rendered it very burdensome during the day. It consisted of a heavy iron ring, fitting closely round the neck, from which extended three prongs, each two feet in length, with a ring on the end...."

if you want some perspective, read up on the corporal punishments meted out to British naval enlisted men during the colonial and post-colonial period
