The 1980s was when Americans decided that greed was good, and we began to worship wealth as never before. It was the beginning of an era of spiritual and moral bankruptcy as America's "greatest generation" (the depression/WW2 generation) were retiring and beginning to pass away. And the 60's/70's "me generation" was taking full control of the wheels of commerce and government. The 1980s was when America decided that anything was acceptable in the pursuit of profit, and that making money mattered far more than the well-being of other people.

The 1980s was when we slipped into that long dark night as a nation. A darkness from which we may never return.

The 1980's saw a new wave of social consciousness. Hip Hip lead the way in some respect in this area. The group Grandmaster Flash released the song The Message which described the hopelessness of the poor.

This idea that greed geared into full force only in the 1980's shows a complete lack of historical knowledge. The greed of the robber barons and the bankers of the late 19th century preceded the "greed is good" mantra of the 1980's by a century. The robber barons greed got so bad that the working people finally got tired of it and pushed back with men like Samuel Gompers leading the way. All this happened decades before the 1980's.

The barons were held accountable and damned by history for what they did. For all the wrist slapping the Geckos of the world ran into they were by and large glorified (and still are, along with their inheritors). If we'd learned our lessons from the Gilded Age we'd have ripped the bankers from Wall Street and made them pay for what they did.

Yes, but the 'robber barons' were a very small, very greedy, ruling elite. The rest of the populace was not obsessed with becoming rich and powerful at any cost. But in the 1980s, everyone wanted to be Gordon Gekko. Ronald Reagan preached the virtues of unrestrained commerce and Milton Friedman coined the new right's holy mantra of "greed is good". The 80s is when we went 'all-in' on selfishness and materialism. No more "hippie-dippie idealism" for us, baby! The go-go 80's was all cash and cocaine, disco and glam-rock. Even Kiss was selling action figures, cartoons, and their souls for money.

i was just 12 years old and I got up at 3 am west coast time to watch this launch! The Shuttle program is a major reason why today I am a mechanical engineer in the aerospace industry designing and building telecommunications satellites. :banana:
