FORGIVENESS OF SIN

89:10.1 "Ancient man only attained consciousness of favor with God through sacrifice. Modern man must develop new techniques of achieving the self-consciousness of salvation. The consciousness of sin persists in the mortal mind, but the thought patterns of salvation therefrom have become outworn and antiquated. The reality of the spiritual need persists, but intellectual progress has destroyed the olden ways of securing peace and consolation for mind and soul.

89:10.2Sin must be redefined as deliberate disloyalty to Deity. There are degrees of disloyalty: the partial loyalty of indecision; the divided loyalty of confliction; the dying loyalty of indifference; and the death of loyalty exhibited in devotion to godless ideals.

89:10.3 The sense or feeling of guilt is the consciousness of the violation of the mores; it is not necessarily sin. There is no real sin in the absence of conscious disloyalty to Deity.

89:10.4 The possibility of the recognition of the sense of guilt is a badge of transcendent distinction for mankind. It does not mark man as mean but rather sets him apart as a creature of potential greatness and ever-ascending glory. Such a sense of unworthiness is the initial stimulus that should lead quickly and surely to those faith conquests which translate the mortal mind to the superb levels of moral nobility, cosmic insight, and spiritual living; thus are all the meanings of human existence changed from the temporal to the eternal, and all values are elevated from the human to the divine.

89:10.5 The confession of sin is a manful repudiation of disloyalty, but it in no wise mitigates the time-space consequences of such disloyalty. But confession—sincere recognition of the nature of sin—is essential to religious growth and spiritual progress.

89:10.6 The forgiveness of sin by Deity is the renewal of loyalty relations following a period of the human consciousness of the lapse of such relations as the consequence of conscious rebellion. The forgiveness does not have to be sought, only received as the consciousness of re-establishment of loyalty relations between the creature and the Creator. And all the loyal sons of God are happy, service-loving, and ever-progressive in the Paradise ascent."

THE HUMAN PARADOX

111:6.1 "Many of the temporal troubles of mortal man grow out of his twofold relation to the cosmos. Man is a part of nature—he exists in nature—and yet he is able to transcend nature. Man is finite, but he is indwelt by a spark of infinity. Such a dual situation not only provides the potential for evil but also engenders many social and moral situations fraught with much uncertainty and not a little anxiety.

111:6.2 The courage required to effect the conquest of nature and to transcend one's self is a courage that might succumb to the temptations of self-pride. The mortal who can transcend self might yield to the temptation to deify his own self-consciousness. The mortal dilemma consists in the double fact that man is in bondage to nature while at the same time he possesses a unique liberty— freedom of spiritual choice and action. On material levels man finds himself subservient to nature, while on spiritual levels he is triumphant over nature and over all things temporal and finite. Such a paradox is inseparable from temptation, potential evil, decisional errors, and when self becomes proud and arrogant, sin may evolve.

- an excerpt from Paper 11

Its wonderful to contemplate the 'paradox of humanity' indeed, since we are a being caught as it were in a realm of material and spiritual nature...simultaneously. 'Pride' is indicated as a primal pre-cursor or doorway to sin, as the soul becomes unduly exalted or esteemed in the light of its mortal weakness and suspectability towards error and imperfection. It is also rooted in a 'self-love' that is based upon a false-image, an illusion of the ego. When mind and soul however surrender to the spirit-essence or light within, a true love for 'self' is realized, but only in the true value or 'worth-ship' of 'God' alone, divinity itself, whose will is pure, whose motive-nature is love.

mind control, spirit and energy.......

mind control, spirit and energy.......

111:6.4 The spirit can dominate mind; so mind can control energy. But mind can control energy only through its own intelligent manipulation of the metamorphic potentials inherent in the mathematical level of the causes and effects of the physical domains. Creature mind does not inherently control energy; that is a Deity prerogative. But creature mind can and does manipulate energy just in so far as it has become master of the energy secrets of the physical universe.

111:6.5 When man wishes to modify physical reality, be it himself or his environment, he succeeds to the extent that he has discovered the ways and means of controlling matter and directing energy. Unaided mind is impotent to influence anything material save its own physical mechanism, with which it is inescapably linked. But through the intelligent use of the body mechanism, mind can create other mechanisms, even energy relationships and living relationships, by the utilization of which this mind can increasingly control and even dominate its physical level in the universe.

This is especially an insightful and soul-empowering passage, of man's own inherent and potential ability to manipulate energy to effect change, even control over certain relationships in the material world. So mind has within it, its own potential to be influenced by and to influence the world around it. Naturally with man's ability and freedom of choice, the potential for both good and evil are present, as far as choice is conditional. With this in mind, an awesome gift and resource is given to man by God, his own power to choose within all that is possible. This includes in it, the final ultimate choice for 'life' (eternal survival) or 'death' (disintegration).

John of Patmos......

John of Patmos......

Who was John of Patmos?

139:4.11 This son of Zebedee was very closely associated with Peter in the early activities of the Christian movement, becoming one of the chief supporters of the Jerusalem church. He was the right-hand support of Peter on the day of Pentecost.

139:4.12 Several years after the martyrdom of James, John married his brother's widow. The last twenty years of his life he was cared for by a loving granddaughter.

139:4.13 John was in prison several times and was banished to the Isle of Patmos for a period of four years until another emperor came to power in Rome. Had not John been tactful and sagacious, he would undoubtedly have been killed as was his more outspoken brother James. As the years passed, John, together with James the Lord's brother, learned to practice wise conciliation when they appeared before the civil magistrates. They found that a “soft answer turns away wrath.” They also learned to represent the church as a “spiritual brotherhood devoted to the social service of mankind” rather than as “the kingdom of heaven.” They taught loving service rather than ruling power— kingdom and king.

Hi Caino,

It would be an interesting study to see if any traditional-orthodox or other records might confirm or correlate to the UB record here. Its interesting too that some people get at least 2 'Johns' mixed up, and there is some debate whether John (which ever one) was even the author, although this record does accept that parts of John's writings were 'redacted'.

Hello Charity,

Indeed, I recall my no longer extant thread "Restoring the Tabernacle of David", where I covered the restoration of 'belovedness' and 'praise' in bringing back the instruments of worship, first enshrined in human hearts, inspiring the spirit, and glorifying the Most High, where each soul is a living stone, an individual dwelling place, a holy vessel unto the Lord :)

1:1.2 The Universal Father never imposes any form of arbitrary recognition, formal worship, or slavish service upon the intelligent will creatures of the universes. The evolutionary inhabitants of the worlds of time and space must of themselves—in their own hearts—recognize, love, and voluntarily worship him. The Creator refuses to coerce or compel the submission of the spiritual free wills of his material creatures. The affectionate dedication of the human will to the doing of the Father's will is man's choicest gift to God; in fact, such a consecration of creature will constitutes man's only possible gift of true value to the Paradise Father. In God, man lives, moves, and has his being; there is nothing which man can give to God except this choosing to abide by the Father's will, and such decisions, effected by the intelligent will creatures of the universes, constitute the reality of that true worship which is so satisfying to the love-dominated nature of the Creator Father.

Blessings in the resurrection life of the Spirit.

4. JOHN ZEBEDEE

139:4.1 "When he became an apostle, John was twenty-four years old and was the youngest of the twelve. He was unmarried and lived with his parents at Bethsaida; he was a fisherman and worked with his brother James in partnership with Andrew and Peter. Both before and after becoming an apostle, John functioned as the personal agent of Jesus in dealing with the Master's family, and he continued to bear this responsibility as long as Mary the mother of Jesus lived.

139:4.2 Since John was the youngest of the twelve and so closely associated with Jesus in his family affairs, he was very dear to the Master, but it cannot be truthfully said that he was “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” You would hardly suspect such a magnanimous personality as Jesus to be guilty of showing favoritism, of loving one of his apostles more than the others. The fact that John was one of the three personal aides of Jesus lent further color to this mistaken idea, not to mention that John, along with his brother James, had known Jesus longer than the others.

139:4.3 Peter, James, and John were assigned as personal aides to Jesus soon after they became apostles. Shortly after the selection of the twelve and at the time Jesus appointed Andrew to act as director of the group, he said to him: “And now I desire that you assign two or three of your associates to be with me and to remain by my side, to comfort me and to minister to my daily needs.” And Andrew thought best to select for this special duty the next three first-chosen apostles. He would have liked to volunteer for such a blessed service himself, but the Master had already given him his commission; so he immediately directed that Peter, James, and John attach themselves to Jesus.

139:4.4 John Zebedee had many lovely traits of character, but one which was not so lovely was his inordinate but usually well-concealed conceit. His long association with Jesus made many and great changes in his character. This conceit was greatly lessened, but after growing old and becoming more or less childish, this self-esteem reappeared to a certain extent, so that, when engaged in directing Nathan in the writing of the Go which now bears his name, the aged apostle did not hesitate repeatedly to refer to himself as the “disciple whom Jesus loved.” In view of the fact that John came nearer to being the chum of Jesus than any other earth mortal, that he was his chosen personal representative in so many matters, it is not strange that he should have come to regard himself as the “disciple whom Jesus loved” since he most certainly knew he was the disciple whom Jesus so frequently trusted.

139:4.5 The strongest trait in John's character was his dependability; he was prompt and courageous, faithful and devoted. His greatest weakness was this characteristic conceit. He was the youngest member of his father's family and the youngest of the apostolic group. Perhaps he was just a bit spoiled; maybe he had been humored slightly too much. But the John of after years was a very different type of person than the self- admiring and arbitrary young man who joined the ranks of Jesus' apostles when he was twenty-four.

139:4.6 Those characteristics of Jesus which John most appreciated were the Master's love and unselfishness; these traits made such an impression on him that his whole subsequent life became dominated by the sentiment of love and brotherly devotion. He talked about love and wrote about love. This “son of thunder” became the “apostle of love”; and at Ephesus, when the aged bishop was no longer able to stand in the pulpit and preach but had to be carried to church in a chair, and when at the close of the service he was asked to say a few words to the believers, for years his only utterance was, “My little children, love one another.”

139:4.7 John was a man of few words except when his temper was aroused. He thought much but said little. As he grew older, his temper became more subdued, better controlled, but he never overcame his disinclination to talk; he never fully mastered this reticence. But he was gifted with a remarkable and creative imagination.

139:4.8 There was another side to John that one would not expect to find in this quiet and introspective type. He was somewhat bigoted and inordinately intolerant. In this respect he and James were much alike— they both wanted to call down fire from heaven on the heads of the disrespectful Samaritans. When John encountered some strangers teaching in Jesus' name, he promptly forbade them. But he was not the only one of the twelve who was tainted with this kind of self-esteem and superiority consciousness.

139:4.9 John's life was tremendously influenced by the sight of Jesus' going about without a home as he knew how faithfully he had made provision for the care of his mother and family. John also deeply sympathized with Jesus because of his family's failure to understand him, being aware that they were gradually withdrawing from him. This entire situation, together with Jesus' ever deferring his slightest wish to the will of the Father in heaven and his daily life of implicit trust, made such a profound impression on John that it produced marked and permanent changes in his character, changes which manifested themselves throughout his entire subsequent life.

139:4.10 John had a cool and daring courage which few of the other apostles possessed. He was the one apostle who followed right along with Jesus the night of his arrest and dared to accompany his Master into the very jaws of death. He was present and near at hand right up to the last earthly hour and was found faithfully carrying out his trust with regard to Jesus' mother and ready to receive such additional instructions as might be given during the last moments of the Master's mortal existence. One thing is certain, John was thoroughly dependable. John usually sat on Jesus' right hand when the twelve were at meat. He was the first of the twelve really and fully to believe in the resurrection, and he was the first to recognize the Master when he came to them on the seashore after his resurrection.

139:4.14 When in temporary exile on Patmos, John wrote the Book of Revelation, which you now have in greatly abridged and distorted form. This Book of Revelation contains the surviving fragments of a great revelation, large portions of which were lost, other portions of which were removed, subsequent to John's writing. It is preserved in only fragmentary and adulterated form.

139:4.15 John traveled much, labored incessantly, and after becoming bishop of the Asia churches, settled down at Ephesus. He directed his associate, Nathan, in the writing of the so-called “Gospel according to John,” at Ephesus, when he was ninety-nine years old. Of all the twelve apostles, John Zebedee eventually became the outstanding theologian. He died a natural death at Ephesus in A.D. 103 when he was one hundred and one years of age." UB 1955

Good old British John. Celtic mary. French peter! UK ::DK:Has anyone ever considered the history of Nations that have been forced to their knees to observe a foreign God. Naturally their seed WILL look without seeing an PERHAPS read without remembrance.

Abraham Migrated to a new country where he created a covenant to seize the Land he sat on THREW HIS GOD, that his seed would rise up in time to receive his promise as Stars of the heavens. (they) were later exiled from their promised Land to returned again 40 years latter, entering Israel under what christians mirror was a christian cloud lead by Moses.

I believe todays Christians are the product of their historical ancestors faith being conquered. I also believe that all evidence of what that faith stood for has be reduced to nil by a barbaric an greedy alliance to split the spoil.. the looting of the Temple Gold, turning Stones an claiming the land an estate. evidence of ongoing Matinance, suppressing the memory of the Kingdom where Harps Pipes an strings sounded as a nation of people Danced an wrote poetry is a will or will not observation.

Please reply if your Brave enough to consider that an ancestor may have forced to the knees to worship an other God!

We note that Jesus also emphasized a 'spiritual brotherhood and unity of mankind' living in harmony with those laws that sustain and foster 'peace and right relations'. Its a 'social gospel' in that its relational value and meaning is expressed/realized in 'service' to 'community'.

170:5.11 The kingdom, to the Jews, was the Israelite community; to the gentiles it became the Christian church. To Jesus the kingdom was the sum of those individuals who had confessed their faith in the fatherhood of God, thereby declaring their wholehearted dedication to the doing of the will of God, thus becoming members of the spiritual brotherhood of man.

170:5.12 The Master fully realized that certain social results would appear in the world as a consequence of the spread of the gospel of the kingdom; but he intended that all such desirable social manifestations should appear as unconscious and inevitable outgrowths, or natural fruits, of this inner personal experience of individual believers, this purely spiritual fellowship and communion with the divine spirit which indwells and activates all such believers.

170:5.13 Jesus foresaw that a social organization, or church, would follow the progress of the true spiritual kingdom, and that is why he never opposed the apostles' practicing the rite of John's baptism. He taught that the truth-loving soul, the one who hungers and thirsts for righteousness, for God, is admitted by faith to the spiritual kingdom; at the same time the apostles taught that such a believer is admitted to the social organization of disciples by the outward rite of baptism.

Yes, "seek ye first the kingdom of heaven" ......but that was to much for the limited minds of the age. So they sought to build a social institution instead, the church. In so doing they reestablished the Sanhedrin.

Jesus didn't teach 'unity' of mankind, other than for us to think of EVERYONE as our neighbor, deserving of our service. He taught of the total depravity of men and their need for repentance. Without His Blood one cannot have any part in Him. Unless one is born again one cannot even see The Kingdom which Jesus taught about. We who are born again can see It, but those who aren't, cannot. Otherwise: He would have taught: "You live in The Kingdom of Heaven..." instead of: "SEEK ye first The Kingdom of Heaven."

As far as the unity of mankind is concerned, that is a given due to their inherent nature as the offspring of God and their oneness with all that exists. The 'loving your neighbor as yourself' is because of this underlying fundamental truth, that we are all one, members of one universal body, the community of man.

He taught of the total depravity of men and their need for repentance.

Well, I wouldn't hone this with too much factualness, as you near the 'total depravity' doctrine as if really true, add in there 'original sin' too, which can be disproven biblically as well. That 'repentance' is essential, of course....as we all need to 'change our minds' in order to change/transform our ways.

One cannot see The Kingdom without being born again. This only takes place through The Blood, without which one has no life in them. You're both dead, due to sin, because you're trampling Jesus' Blood underfoot. Repent! You have no chance of escaping hell, otherwise.

I agree, a spiritual regeneration or 'rebirth' enables one to know/experience the spiritual. 'Being born from above'.

This only takes place through The Blood, without which one has no life in them. You're both dead, due to sin, because you're trampling Jesus' Blood underfoot.

We've covered 'blood-atonement', and also the 'Eucharist' previously below:

Reconsidering the concept of blood-atonement

Repent! You have no chance of escaping hell, otherwise.

Repentance is indeed a part of one's religious life, since the changing, renewing or transforming of the mind is part of one's conforming of the will to God's will, coordinating one's life to be more perfect like the Father in heaven is perfect.

As far as 'hell' goes, do you mean 'sheol', 'hades', 'gehenna', or 'tataroo'? Or are you referring to the 'figurative' lake of fire mentioned in the book of Revelation? These different terms refer to different places, but have all been translated into the English word 'hell', which makes for confusion.

For more on 'hell' see "what the hell is hell?" - it may clarify some things.

As far what the UB teaches about 'hell' see the articles below -

Hell in the UB

What about hell and judgment day?

Is hell real?

Always keep in mind: True religion is to know God as your Father and man as your brother. Religion is not a slavish belief in threats of punishment or magical promises of future mystical rewards. (99:5.2, )

Ignoring Christ's Words and discounting His Blood is sheer foolishness.

That's not how it works. That would be works salvation. What actually happens is: God enters into our hearts and changes it into a clean heart, which desires to please Him. He gives us hints along the way to lead us into a better us than we were before He entered. It isn't by our works, it's by His Presence. It is not by His Power or by His Might that we are changed into His Image and Likeness... it's by His Spirit.
As far as 'hell' goes, do you mean 'sheol', 'hades', 'gehenna', or 'tataroo'?
The region of the damned. The 'holding tank' for those who will one day be cast into the Lake of Fire, which will be eternal, conscious torment.
Or are you referring to the 'figurative' lake of fire mentioned in the book of Revelation?
Already explained above.
These different terms refer to different places, but have all been translated into the English word 'hell', which makes for confusion.
Your confusion is understood. You wish to make an argument out of everything you read in Scripture, since you don't believe Truth. Understood.

I'm not interested in doctrines of demons and since the UB originated by channeling, it's definitely just that.

Ignoring Christ's Words and discounting His Blood is sheer foolishness.

Addressed earlier. 'Blood' is being used 'figuratively', and we can contest the concept of 'blood-atonement' on principle alone, not to mention that words could have been put in the mouth of Jesus by heresay or tradition.

That's not how it works. That would be works salvation. What actually happens is: God enters into our hearts and changes it into a clean heart, which desires to please Him. The UB would agree that grace working by the power of the Spirit in the soul, is what carries us along, our wills being conformed to do the will of God. The UB has only 4 references of the word 'rebirth' being used, but they are quite prolific in explaining this concept of 'regeneration' of the spirit, a transforming work within one's soul. I'll do a commentary on these shortly.

The region of the damned. The 'holding tank' for those who will one day be cast into the Lake of Fire, which will be eternal, conscious torment.

You know I reject the concept of ECT and have expounded much on my reasons why here and elsewhere.

You wish to make an argument out of everything you read in Scripture, since you don't believe Truth.

I happen to reconsider concepts, principles and beliefs to see if they have the ring of truth, testing them by reason, logic, common sense, conscience and my own religious experience or spiritual intuition,....ever re-evaluating/researching to come to a better more perfect approximation of truth.

I'm not interested in doctrines of demons and since the UB originated by channeling, it's definitely just that.

The Urantia Papers did not come about thru what is commonly referred to as channeling as known today, but by more mysterious operations. Resources have been provided for one's research on that, but what is most important is what has been communicated in the papers, and judging the material on its own intrinsic and relative worth.

Remember, Jesus said to keep asking, seeking and knocking,...and you will discover truth, if you keep an open mind and inquisitive spirit....you will draw closer to it.

Lesson on Self-mastery -

143:2.2 At one of the evening conferences, Andrew asked Jesus: “Master, are we to practice self-denial as John taught us, or are we to strive for the self-control of your teaching? Wherein does your teaching differ from that of John?” Jesus answered: “John indeed taught you the way of righteousness in accordance with the light and laws of his fathers, and that was the religion of self-examination and self-denial. But I come with a new message of self-forgetfulness and self-control. I show to you the way of life as revealed to me by my Father in heaven.

143:2.3 “Verily, verily, I say to you, he who rules his own self is greater than he who captures a city. Self-mastery is the measure of man's moral nature and the indicator of his spiritual development. In the old order you fasted and prayed; as the new creature of the rebirth of the spirit, you are taught to believe and rejoice. In the Father's kingdom you are to become new creatures; old things are to pass away; behold I show you how all things are to become new. And by your love for one another you are to convince the world that you have passed from bondage to liberty, from death into life everlasting.

143:2.4 “By the old way you seek to suppress, obey, and conform to the rules of living; by the new way you are first transformed by the Spirit of Truth and thereby strengthened in your inner soul by the constant spiritual renewing of your mind, and so are you endowed with the power of the certain and joyous performance of the gracious, acceptable, and perfect will of God. Forget not—it is your personal faith in the exceedingly great and precious promises of God that ensures your becoming partakers of the divine nature. Thus by your faith and the spirit's transformation, you become in reality the temples of God, and his spirit actually dwells within you. If, then, the spirit dwells within you, you are no longer bondslaves of the flesh but free and liberated sons of the spirit. The new law of the spirit endows you with the liberty of self-mastery in place of the old law of the fear of self-bondage and the slavery of self-denial.

-From Paper 143

Here is an interesting excerpt from a discourse where Jesus appears to quote from Proverbs adding interesting insights on the subject of 'self-mastery', and how our becoming new 'creatures' is synonymous with a 'rebirth of the spirit', indicating a transformation. Here its correlated with 'self-mastery',..which by the way, is listed as a fruit of the Spirit by the author of Galations. (Galatians 5:22-23)
