I am not surprised that you have no understanding of the required tasks of a military officer, you are ignorant of many things.

I come from a family with a long, long military tradition...and you're completely all over the map. By the way, defending THall is a fool's errand.

You are wrong, and you know nothing of the proper way to deal with threats because you have no training. Stop pretending you know what honor is, or what a hero is, you don't. Heroes act out of unselfishness, a love for mankind, and in lethal situations they do what is best for the group, not what is best for their best friend, and let everyone else die. If you had to go through the process of deciding whether or not to award medals, and had to read the testimony of those that survived lethal encounters, and analyze those situations, and then make recommendations that are subject to the harsh criticism of those you serve with, then you would understand what I am saying, and what THall was trying to teach you. Unfortunately you have no real world experience in these matters and have chosen an emotional argument to defend a friend rather than the truth.

It doesn't matter if I have "training." One doesn't need "training" of the type you have in mind to recognize honor and character in another.

Honor and character aren't stored away and only displayed when there's a grenade to jump on, they're part of (or should be part of) your every day behavior and interactions with others.

You and THall haven't shown either here from day one at TOL.

Yes, Australians are on average much more self reliant than poor African Americans.
From an Aussie website I found …

"We are a Socialist nation. More specifically we are a Socialist-Capitalist nation and we have been for decades. The signs are all there, the commitment to universal health care, comprehensive welfare sector while at the same time maintaining a free market economy (with some regulation).

Here's something shocking as well. We keep electing Socialist-Capitalist governments. The Labor party started out socialist, as did the National Party, while the Liberal Party has come to socialism through more pragmatic means (socialism = votes). I dare you to name one government in the past forty years that wasn't socialist in some major way."

Perhaps it's you who needs to do some homework.

Consider this, John and Jane Doe, are not trained in emergency response to murderous lunatics. Most of us do our very best under the circumstances.
ARMCHAIR quarterbacking does a disservice to all involved.
I'm a retired nurse. In an emergency it is expected that I will perform in a manner in keeping with what may be expected of a trained and reasonably prudent nurse based on the circumstances at hand.

You are in denial of the attitudes and belief systems of the average poor African American. I have to deal with them in therapy every day.

That's the effect of generations of injustice and poverty: the result of 200 years of abuse and oppression. And now here's arrogant little you, blaming it all on them for not rising above it.

I have clients that call the police when their pilot light goes out on their heater.

I have clients that call the police when their refrigerator stops working.

I have clients that expect the government to feed them.

I have clients with mild depression that demand that I do their paperwork so they can get disability and won't have to work.

You can place the blame wherever you like, I don't care what you think.

most of the immigrants to the us were fleeing oppression or hardship and had to manage to get here on their own

unlike some others who got a free boat ride

Sounds like you really don't like your clients. How well can you be serving them with that attitude? I wonder what they're thinking about the world after having experienced your contempt? Maybe you need to go find some other job.

There is merit to what you say but there is no merit in that behavior.
The Irish who came here were virtually burdened with much of the same oppression. They weren't actual "slaves" but many were indentured with not a prayer of ever earning their freedom from debt. Almost all doors and avenues to advancement were closed to them. Many died in poverty, alcoholism, criminality and debauchery.
BUT, many forged ahead, helped each other, endured great privations to better themselves and the possibilities for their children.
In the community of person's who identify themselves as "African-Americans" there are thousands, tens of thousand of success stories! People who persevere under great adversity and do make a better life for themselves.
Do not demean these folks by claiming that they couldn't make it on their own efforts and enterprise!

Sometimes "merit" is a luxury that people can't even see, let alone, afford, anymore.

The Irish did not have a giant black stigmata painted on their faces that kept them the 'odd man out' their entire lives, no matter how hard they worked, how long they studied, or how well they behaved.
In the community of person's who identify themselves as "African-Americans" there are thousands, tens of thousand of success stories! People who persevere under great adversity and do make a better life for themselves.
"Under great adversity", yes. That's the thing about "great adversity", MOST PEOPLE CAN'T OVERCOME IT. That's why it's called "great" adversity, as opposed to "insignificant" adversity.
Do not demean these folks by claiming that they couldn't make it on their own efforts and enterprise!
No, lets demean all those folks who were unable to overcome the "great adversity" that we have all unfairly been subjecting them to for 200 years, instead, because that would be so much more … to our liking.

You confuse my contempt for your excuse making with something else. I don't have contempt for my clients, just idiots like you who try to enable them, instead of do what I do, which is to encourage them to be more self reliant, and direct them to resources that will help them get there. Basically set goals and take positive action steps.

Many of the clients I have were misdiagnosed and had the wrong treatment plan, and are not getting better. That is why they wind up with me, in our system. I blame their parents and the folks that misdiagnosed them more than anything else. Many of them make great progress, once they start getting the right treatment, and that is the rewarding part of my job. There are many other parts that are not pretty, just tough situations.

I don't have a single client who has been demeaned for 200 years. They have baggage, but now you are being histrionic and disingenuous, try keeping it real, and try living in the present, you get more done that way.
