Alone With God

When storms of life are round me beating,
When rough the path that I have trod,
Within my closet door retreating,
I love to be alone with God.

What tho’ the clouds have gathered o’er me?
What tho’ I’ve passed beneath the rod?
God’s perfect will there lies before me,
When I am thus alone with God.

’Tis there I find new strength for duty,
As o’er the sands of time I plod;
I see the King in all His beauty,
While resting there alone with God.

And when I see the moment nearing
When I shall sleep beneath the sod,
When time with me is disappearing,
I want to be alone with God.

Alone with God, the world forbidden,
Alone with God, O blest retreat!
Alone with God, and in Him hidden,
To hold with Him communion sweet.

Less of self and more of Jesus, less of man and more of God;
Earnest prayer of many workers in the vineyard of the Lord.
Less of self and more of Jesus girds the soul with holy pow’r,
Brightens life, and sweetens labor, in the use of every hour.

Less of self and more of Jesus, pleads the saint in earnest prayer,
For he labors souls to rescue from the tempter’s cruel snare.
Self concealed, faith works its wonders, trusts the merit of the blood;
Claims for Christ the sinner’s ransom, leads the penitent to God.

Less of self and more of Jesus, as in social life we meet;
May the beauties of salvation others lead to Jesus’ feet.
Not in vain exalt we Jesus, not in vain hide self away;
Great the joy and sweet the pleasure heaven grants us on our way.

Through hidden dangers, toils, and deaths, it gently cleared my way;
And through the pleasing snares of vice, more to be feared than they.

O how shall words with equal warmth the gratitude declare,
That glows within my ravished heart? But thou canst read it there.
Thy bounteous hand with worldly bliss hath made my cup run o’er;
And, in a kind and faithful Friend, hath doubled all my store.

Ten thousand thousand precious gifts my daily thanks employ;
Nor is the last a cheerful heart that tastes those gifts with joy.
When worn with sickness, oft hast Thou with health renewed my face;
And, when in sins and sorrows sunk, revived my soul with grace.

Through every period of my life Thy goodness I’ll pursue
And after death, in distant worlds, the glorious theme renew.

Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry have ready access unto Thee;
When in distress to Thee I fly, O hide not Thou Thy face from me.
Attend, O Lord, to my desire, O haste to answer when I pray;
For grief consumes my strength like fire, my days as smoke pass swift away.

My heart is withered like the grass, and I forget my daily bread;

O Lord, regard the prayer of those who love the walls of Zion well,
Whose hearts are heavy for her woes, who sad amid her ruins dwell.
Thy power and glory shall appear, and Zion’s walls shall be restored;
Then all the kings of earth shall fear and heathen nations serve the Lord.

The Lord, exalted on His throne, looked down from Heav’n with pitying eye
To still the lowly captive’s moan and save His people doomed to die.
All men in Zion shall declare His gracious name with one accord,
When kings and nations gather there to serve and worship God the Lord.

Lord, Thee I’ll Praise With All My Heart

Lord, Thee I’ll praise with all my heart,

When back my enemies were turned,
They fell and perished at Thy sight.
