Lead Us, O Father

Lead us, O Father, in the paths of peace:
Without Thy guiding hand we go astray,
And doubts appall, and sorrows still increase;
Lead us through Christ, the true and living Way.

Lead us, O Father, in the paths of truth:
Unhelped by Thee, in error’s name we grope,
While passion stains, and folly dims our youth,
And age comes on, uncheered by faith or hope.

Lead us, O Father, in the paths of right:
Blindly we stumble when we walk alone,
Involved in shadows of a darksome night;
Only with Thee we journey safely on.

Lead us, O Father, to Thy heavenly rest,
However rough and steep the path may be,
Through joy or sorrow, as Thou deemest best,
Until our lives are perfected in Thee.

Once He traveled the way we go, felt the pangs of deceit and woe;
Who more perfectly then can know, Than Jesus, blessed Jesus?

He heareth the cry of the soul distressed, Jesus, blessed Jesus;
He healeth the wounded, He giveth rest, Jesus, blessed Jesus:
When from loved ones we part, when the tears in our anguish start,
None can comfort the breaking heart, like Jesus, blessed Jesus.

His arm is around us with keeping pow’r, Jesus, blessed Jesus:
When we enter the shadowland, when at Jordan we trembling stand,

Brief Life is Here Our Portion

Brief life is here our portion, brief sorrow, short lived care;
The life that knows no ending, the tearless life, is there.
There grief is turned to pleasure, such pleasure as below.
No human voice can utter, no human heart can know.
And after fleshly weakness, and after this world’s night,
And after storm and whirlwind, are calm, and joy, and light.

And now we fight the battle, but then shall wear the crown
Of full and everlasting and passionless renown.
And He, whom now we trust in, shall then be seen and known;
And they that know and see Him shall have Him for their own.
The morning shall awaken, the shadows flee away,
And each true hearted servant shall shine as doth the day.

There God, our King and Portion, in fullness of His grace,
We then shall see forever, and worship face to face.
O sweet and blessed country, the home of God’s elect!
O sweet and blessed country, that eager hearts expect!
Jesus, in mercy bring us, to that dear land of rest;
Who art, with God the Father, and Spirit, ever blest.

The LORD has anointed Me…To console those who mourn…To give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Isaiah 61:1-3​

Beauty for Ashes

I sing the love of God, my Father, whose Spirit abides within,
Who changes all my grief to gladness, and pardons me all my sin.
Though clouds may lower, dark and dreary, yet He has promised to be near;
He gives me sunshine for my shadow, and “beauty for ashes” here.

I sing the love of God, my Savior, who suffered upon the tree,
That, in the secret of His presence, my bondage might freedom be.
He comes to “bind the brokenhearted”, He comes the fainting soul to cheer;
He gives me “oil of joy” for mourning, and “beauty for ashes” here.

I sing the beauty of the Gospel that scatters, not thorns, but flowers,
That bids me scatter smiles and sunbeams wherever are lonely hours.
The “garment of His praise” it offers for “heaviness of spirit” drear;
It gives me sunshine for my shadow, and “beauty for ashes” here.

He gives me joy in place of sorrow;
He gives me love that casts out fear;
He gives me sunshine for my shadow,
And “beauty for ashes” here.

Resting in God’s Peace

My soul is resting in God’s peace,
Without a doubt or fear;
The boisterous waves of trouble cease,
For Christ, my Lord, is near.

The Spirit poureth from on high,
A sanctifying tide,
And bathing in its streams of joy,
My soul is satisfied.

My hand in His, I will not fear,
How fierce may be the storm;
I’m sheltered in His love each day,
And kept from all alarm.

He drives my every doubt away,
He gives me childlike faith;
And so I take the yea or nay,
Just as my Father saith.

Resting in God’s sweet peace;

You cannot see the future
God’s purpose to explain.

So trust, faint heart, thy master,
He doeth all things well,
His love to you is boundless,
And more than tongue can tell.

The Guiding Hand

Through each perplexing care and strife,
That marks the checkered path of life,
My Savior’s guiding hand I see,
And know that still He leadeth me.

Though trials great before me rise,
Though clouds of sorrow veil my skies,
Unmoved the coming storm I see,
For God my Savior leadeth me.

He leadeth me, O joy divine!
The glory His, the cross be mine,
Since He who suffered on the tree
In tender mercy leadeth me.

With Him, my soul’s eternal guide,
What can I wish or want beside?
In life or death my song shall be,
My loving Savior leadeth me.

Make Me a Captive, Lord

Make me a captive, Lord, and then I shall be free.
Force me to render up my sword, and I shall conqueror be.
I sink in life’s alarms when by myself I stand;
Imprison me within Thine arms, and strong shall be my hand.

My heart is weak and poor until it master find;
It has no spring of action sure, it varies with the wind.
It cannot freely move till Thou has wrought its chain;
Enslave it with Thy matchless love, and deathless it shall reign.

My power is faint and low till I have learned to serve;
It lacks the needed fire to glow, it lacks the breeze to nerve.
It cannot drive the world until itself be driven;
Its flag can only be unfurled when Thou shalt breathe from heaven.

My will is not my own till Thou hast made it Thine;
If it would reach a monarch’s throne, it must its crown resign.
It only stands unbent amid the clashing strife,
When on Thy bosom it has leant, and found in Thee its life.

Night had fallen on the city, and the streets at last were still,
Where the noisy throng the day-long, did the air with shoutings fill.
And the weary wayworn travelers preaching Jesus thro’ the land,
Were in deepest dungeon darkness, at the magistrates’ command.

Many stripes to them were given many curses on them cast;
Many bolts and bars surround them, in the stocks their feet were fast.
While the trusty Roman jailer, all securely slumbering on,
Little dreamed the mighty wonder of the morrow’s early dawn.

Hark the sighing of the prisoners, hear their moanings loud and long;
No, again, and louder, clearer, ’tis the voice of prayer and song.
See, the prison walls are shaking, and the door wide open stands;
Lo, the earth, the earth is quaking, loosed are every prisoner’s bands.

Oh, there’s not a cell so lonely, but a song may echo there;
Oh, there’s not a night so cheerless, but there’s potency in prayer.
Sing, oh sing, thou weary pilgrim, song will bring thee heav’nly peace,
Pray, oh pray, thou burdened prisoner, god will give thee sweet release.

Come, Let Us Sing Before The Lord

Come, let us sing before the Lord new songs of praise with sweet accord,
For wonders great by Him are done, His mighty arm has victory won.
The great salvation of our God is seen through all the earth abroad;
Before the nations’ wondering sight He has revealed His truth and right.

He called to mind the truth and grace bestowed upon His chosen race,
And unto earth’s remotest bound glad tidings of salvation sound.
All lands, to God lift up your voice, sing praise to Him, with shouts rejoice;
With voice of joy and loud acclaim let all unite and praise His name.

Praise ye the Lord with harp and song, with voice of psalms His praise prolong;
In swelling chorus gladly sing and shout before the Lord, the king.
Let earth be glad, let ocean roar, and praises sound from shore to shore;
Let floods and hills with glad accord show forth their joy before the Lord.

We thank Thee for this rest from earthly care and strife;

Where Thou, upon Thy throne of mercy, still dost wait.

We thank Thee for Thy Word, Thy Gospel’s joyful sound;
Oh, may its holy fruits within our hearts abound!

Yet, ere we go to rest, Father, to Thee we pray,
Forgive the sins that stain e’en this Thy holy day.

Through Jesus let the past be blotted from Thy sight,
And let us all now sleep at peace with Thee this night.

To God the Father, Son, and Spirit glory be,

Far off I see the goal — O Savior, guide me;
I feel my strength is small — be Thou beside me;

And grace to persevere, O Lord, provide me.

Whene’er Thy way seems strange, go Thou before me;
And, lest my heart should change, O Lord, watch o’er me;
But, should my faith prove frail, and I through blindness fail,
O let Thy grace prevail, and still restore me.

Should earthly pleasures wane, and joy forsake me;
And lonely hours of pain at length o’ertake me,
My hand in Thine hold fast till sorrow be o’erpast,
And gentle death at last for Heav’n awake me.

There, with the ransomed throng who praise forever
The love that made them strong to serve forever,
I, too, would seek Thy face, Thy finished work retrace,
And magnify Thy grace, redeemed forever.

The Message of His Coming

We’re looking for His coming, in the clouds of heaven,
Coming back to earth to catch away His own;
Then may we all be ready, when midnight cry is given,
To go and reign with Christ on His throne.

We’re longing for the glory that awaits the faithful,
Who shall overcome, and ev’ry conflict win;
Press ever bravely onward, the prize is life eternal
To all who win the fight over sin.

We’re praying for the advent of our blessed Savior,
Who has promised life to all who trust His grace;
His coming now is pending, the message being given,
And soon we’ll see our Lord face to face.

We see the signs appearing of His blessed coming,
Lo, behold the fig leaves now becoming green;
The Gospel of His kingdom has gone to every nation;
That we are near the end can be seen.

Gladly may we herald the message of His blessed appearing,
Soon He’s coming in glory, tell to one and all;
Be ye watchful all ye saints of the Lord,
As we see that the end is nearing,
And get ready for the final call.

If Jesus Came To Your House
(Used by Permission)

If Jesus came to your house to spend a day or two
If he came unexpectedly, I wonder what you’d do.
Oh, I know you’d give your nicest room to such an honored Guest,
And all the food you’d serve to Him would be the very best,
And you keep assuring Him you’re glad to have Him there
That serving Him in your own home is joy beyond compare.

But when you saw Him coming, would you meet Him at the door
With arms outstretched in welcome to your heavenly Visitor?
Or would you have to change your clothes before you let Him in,
Or hide some magazines and put the Bible where they’d been?
Would you turn off the radio and hope He hadn’t heard,
And wish you hadn’t uttered that last, loud, hasty word?

Would you hide your worldly music and put some hymn books out?
Could you let Jesus walk right in, or would you rush about?
And I wonder if the Savior spent a day or two with you,
Would you go right on doing the things you always do?
Would you go right on saying the things you always say,
Would life for you continue as it does from day to day?
Would your family conversation keep up its usual pace,
And would you find it hard each meal to say a table grace?

Would you sing the songs you always sing, and read the books you read,
And let him know the things on which your mind and spirit feed?
Would you take Jesus with you everywhere you’d planned to go?
Or would you, maybe, change your plans for just a day or so?
Would you be glad to have Him meet your very closest friends,
Or would you hope they’d stay away until His visit ends?
Would you be glad to have Him stay forever on and on,
Or would you sigh with great relief when He at last was gone?
It might be interesting to know the things that you would do,
If Jesus came in person to spend some time with you.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?

And feel in the presence of Jesus at home!
Sweet hands that unite all the children of peace!
And thrice precious Jesus, whose love cannot cease!
Tho’ oft from Thy presence in sadness I roam,
I long to behold Thee in glory at home.

I sigh from this body of sin to be free,
Which hinders my joy and communion with Thee,
Though now my temptations like billows may foam,
All, all will be peace when I’m with Thee at home.
While here in the valley of conflict I stay,
O give me submission, and strength as my day;
In all my afflictions to Thee would I come,
Rejoicing in hope of my glorious home.

Whate’er Thou deniest, O give me Thy grace!

I should have perished in my woe

Speak My Lord

Hear the Lord of harvest sweetly calling,
“Who will go and work for Me today?
Who will bring to Me the lost and dying?
Who will point them to the narrow way?”

When the coal of fire touched the prophet,
Making him as pure, as pure can be,
When the voice of God said, “Who’ll go for us?”
Then he answered, “Here I am, send me.”

Millions now in sin and shame are dying,
Listen to their sad and bitter cry;
Hasten, brother, hasten to the rescue;
Quickly answer, “Master, here am I.”

Soon the time for reaping will be over;
Soon we’ll gather for the harvest home;
May the Lord of harvest smile upon us,
May we hear His blessed, “Child, well done.”

I’ll Go Where You Want Me To Go

It may not be on the mountain’s height, or over the stormy sea;
It may not be at the battle’s front my Lord will have need of me;
But if by a still, small voice He calls to paths I do not know,
I’ll answer, dear Lord, with my hand in Yours,
I’ll go where You want me to go.

Perhaps today there are loving words which Jesus would have me speak;
There may be now, in the paths of sin, some wand’rer whom I should seek.
O Savior, if You will be my Guide, though dark and rugged the way,
My voice shall echo the message sweet,
I’ll say what You want me to say.

There’s surely somewhere a lowly place in earth’s harvest fields so wide,
Where I may labor through life’s short day for Jesus, the Crucified.
So, trusting my all unto Your care, I know You always love me!
I’ll do Your will with a heart sincere,
I’ll be what You want me to be.

I’ll go where You want me to go, dear Lord,
O’er mountain, or plain, or sea;
I’ll say what You want me to say, dear Lord,
I’ll be what You want me to be.

Follow Me

I traveled down a lonely road and no one seemed to care;
The burden on my weary back had bowed me to despair,
I oft complained to Jesus how folks were treating me,
And then I heard Him say so tenderly,
“My feet were also weary, upon the Calv’ry road;
The cross became so heavy, I fell beneath the load,
Be faithful weary pilgrim, the morning I can see,
Just lift your cross and follow close to me.”

“I work so hard for Jesus” I often boast and say,
“I've sacrificed a lot of things to walk the narrow way,
I gave up fame and fortune, I'm worth a lot to Thee,”
And then I hear Him gently say to me.
“I left the throne of glory and counted it but loss,
My hands were nailed in anger upon a cruel cross,
But now we'll make the journey with your hand safe in mine,
So lift your cross and follow close to me.”

Oh, Jesus if I die upon a foreign field some day,
’Twould be no more than love demands no less could I repay,
“No greater love hath mortal man than for a friend to die.”
These are the words He gently spoke to me,
“If just a cup of water I place within your hand
Then just a cup of water is all that I demand,”
But if by death to living they can thy glory see,
I'll take my cross and follow close to thee.
