Montana played nearly flawless in the biggest game. He was 83 of 122 for a stellar 68% against the best competition. One big loss is when Roger Craig dropped an open pass, preventing another trip to the Super Bowl. 1142 yards, 11 TDs 0 Ints. I forget what year when Craig dropped the ball. The Giants went to the Super Bowl. I would have to go to pro-reference.com.

That was 1990-91. The 49ers were the 2-time defending Super Bowl champs. They led the Giants in the NFL championship game 13-12 with less than three minutes to play. The 49ers had the ball in Giants territory and were trying to run out the clock. Then Roger Craig fumbles a handoff and the Giants recover. The Giants march down the field and kick the winning field goal. :noid:

I don't know about Kurt Warner. He was great for a short while but I'm not sure he had enough great seasons to merit Hall of Fame induction. My biggest issues are that Warner had a late start to his career (age 27 as a rookie) and he missed a lot of games with injuries.

The late start limited years, as did his injury, but he had two great SBs with two different teams and outside of the middle, injury plagued stretch he was terrific. He has more to go on than a few who are enshrined.

Kurt Warner, career: 116 games

32,344 yds, 208 tds, 128 ints, 7.9 avg. 65.5% comp. 93.7 rating.

Playoffs:
3,952 yds, 31 td, 14 int, 8.6 avg., 66.5% comp., 102.8 rating.

He is the eighth highest rated SB qb combined appearances. Below him? Roger Staubach.

John Elway, career: 234 games
51,475 yds., 300 tds, 226 ints, 7.1 avg., 56.9% comp., 79.9 rating

Playoffs:
4,964 yds, 27 tds, 21 ints, 7.6 avg., 54.5% comp., 79.7

So Elway has twice as many games to not nearly double Warner's yardage, comes up short, notably short in nearly every comparable measurement...we have enough sampling to see that when he wasn't injured Warner was a great player. And he was even better in the playoffs. Better in both regular and post season than the legend Elway.

He compares favorably with a fairly large number of HOFers at the position.

I think the wait was a nod to the lesser games (though I'd have put him in first ballot) but there's no way he doesn't belong in the Hall.

Jim Kelly: 160 games

Career: 35,467 yds., 237 tds, 175 ints, 7.4 avg, 60.1% comp., 84.4 rating.

Playoffs: 3863 yds, 21 tds, 28 ints, 7.1 avg., 72.3 rating.

Denver has lost 5 Super Bowls.

They weren't just losses, they were blowouts:

27-10
39-20
42-10
55-10
43-8

The average score of the five losses is 41.2 - 11.6

Ouch.....

Ah yes, he Thurman Thomas'd his way to defeat. Even the best lose sometimes. I couldn't remember the exact form of the hot potato. A dropped pass would have been better.

For most of his career Peyton was the reason his teams won anything (see: the disaster of a two win season without him in Indy) but Peyton was the Larry Bird of his sport, raising boats around him without becoming a me player. If Peyton wins today it will be the ultimate team statement, as he's now in a game managing position for the first season of his professional life. The offensive line play will tell us if the Broncos have a chance. They have to give Manning time to find targets. That Denver defense is even better than their numbers and Arizona hasn't prepared Carolina for it.

Either way a Southern boy will walk off the field and into glory at the position. Peyton on his way out or Cam on his way to building a new legend.

Anyone who doesn't know it's about team and always has been hasn't been paying attention to the game. John Elway didn't win without a team. Won diminished with a team around him. What did the great Montana win without a team worthy of his play around him? What ended the greatest show on turf? Teamwork.

Prediction time. The only way the game is a blow out is to have a team not show up mentally. How that happens, I don't know, but it happens. Like the first snap going into the endzone.

I will give Carolina a small edge in a low scoring game unless Manning had a good two weeks of rest and injections.

the denver defense is the only reason they are in the super bowl
and
someone can take the credit for that
peyton can't
peyton can take credit for all the overpaid quarterbacks in the nfl that haven't even made it to the super bowl let alone win one
the quarterback must know that his salary is preventing most teams from getting the other players that they need

No, you still have to score points. It's the most important reason, but you're selling your team concept short.

and someone can take the credit for that peyton can't
You need to decide which is more important to you, the team notion or downgrading Peyton.

peyton can take credit for all the overpaid quarterbacks in the nfl that haven't even made it to the super bowl let alone win one
Not really. Not historically or lately. Here are the facts.

There are fifteen starting quarterbacks with bigger contracts than Peyton. If you're going to criticize the position pay you'd have to start with Aaron Rodgers 110 million, 22 mil a year, 54 mil guaranteed and not Peyton with his 34 mil contract with 15 mil guaranteed.

If you're going historically, you can go back to Green Bay, where Favre inked a 100 mil contract in 2001, the same year Brady signed a Pats contract worth 103 million. In 2002 Donovan McNabb got a 115 mil dollar deal from Philly. 2003, Daunte Culpepper signs with Minnesota for 102 mil. Also in 2003, Michael Vick signs with Atlanta for 130 mil.

In 2004 Peyton signs a 98 mil deal. So making him the poster child for quarterback salaries makes you the poster child for doofi.

the quarterback must know that his salary is preventing most teams from getting the other players that they need
So, the quarterback should take less so other players can take more.

Socialist. :)

Injections for pain from team doctors ? Or HGH ?

Super Bowl prediction. The Panthers can do enough offensively to win a close game. Denver messed Brady up but Cam will provide more difficulty with his ability to run and pass.

I don't feel very comfortable with that pick though. There could be a destiny thing going on and this being Manning's last game will be a big emotional boost. I can easily see everyone rising to the occasion.
