To illustrate how God can be One, in three distinct forms, let us use the teachings of St Patrick. A clover has three leaves. Each leaf is individual and separate from the other two. Yet, the leaves are joined together in a single unit, ie: the clover.
Bs"d
That clover is not one but three, but God is ONE.
Also, keep in mind that in the NT, Christ said "I and the Father are one."
And everybody with two working brain cells understand that a plurality (we) cannot be one.
Such a phrase was blasphemous in Jewish culture.
It still is.
Christ was claiming He was God incarnate.
He was not the first, nor the last. The mental institutions are full of people who claim to be God.
Hence, the outrage of the Pharisees. Now, how can God be the Father and the Son? Either Christ is God, or a raving lunatic.
So what was it, God or a raving lunatic?
It is now 2000 years later, not so easy to judge his mental health. Let's look what his own family who interacted with him every day, said about it:
"Then the multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread. 21 But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, “He is out of His mind.”
Mark 3:20
If He is God, He cannot contradict Himself. So by saying that He is two, it must be possible, if the conclusion is that He is God.
The Bible teaches that God is ONE, and therefore not two.
Finally, why could God not be a Trinity, if He claims to be?
One: God does NOT claim to be a trinity,
Two: God does claim to be ONE:

"And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, "Which commandment is the first of all?" Jesus answered, "The first is, `Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, THE LORD IS
ONE; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' The second is this, `You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." And the scribe said to him, "You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that HE IS
ONE, and there is no other but he; and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices." And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God."" Mark 12:28-34 Revised Standard Version
