That is sad.
One of the saddest stories I ever heard about was a father and his two children were caught up in floodwaters. (This was years ago).
The father caught up with one child, took his belt off and strapped the child to a tree while he swam for the other child and saved him.
But when he went back for the first child he had strapped to a tree, the water had risen and drowned the child.
