When I was in Switzerland the gendarmes let me sleep at the gendarmery (jail) when I got locked out of my hostel late at night.

I was walking in a non pedestrian zone

"Ho! non piteon" he said
I said "wot?"
"Allermagne?"
"Anglais"

"Anglais?" then he chased me waving his arms
