I withdraw my rebuke. You're right...Paul, the expert on tongues, said they were a sign not for those who believe but for unbelievers -- specifically, Jews who were refusing Christ. Meaningless idiot babbling would be a sign only that the babbler is a foolish fake or insane, but to speak in an identifiable human language the speaker could not possibly know was the miracle and the sign. That is ALWAYS what happened during the Acts period. That alone proves the true gift is long gone.
No.
Act 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
Act 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
Act 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Act 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
Act 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
Act 10:48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
Where were the unbelievers?
There were none.
How did they know they were speaking in tongues if it was in their own language?
When men are sent on a mission then they may speak in the language of the people where they are sent.
You need to read more of the testimonies of the saints who went into Africa and China and other places, and even to Haiti a few years back.
Genuine speaking in tongues is the spirit of prophecy.
If you do not have the Spirit of prophecy then just what gift of the nine do you claim to have??
1Co 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
1Co 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
1Co 12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
1Co 12:10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
1Co 12:11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
