Congress clears historic health care bill

WASHINGTON – Summoned to success by President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled Congress approved historic legislation Sunday night extending health care to tens of millions of uninsured Americans and cracking down on insurance company abuses, a climactic chapter in the century-long quest for near universal coverage.

Widely viewed as dead two months ago, the Senate-passed bill cleared the House on a 219-212 vote. Republicans were unanimous in opposition, joined by 34 dissident Democrats.

Obama watched the vote in the White House's Roosevelt Room with Vice President Joe Biden and about 40 staff aides. When the long sought 216th vote came in — the magic number needed for passage — the room burst into applause and hugs. An exultant president exchanged a high-five with his chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel.

A second, smaller measure — making changes in the first — was lined up for passage later in the evening. It would then go to the Senate, where Democratic leaders said they had the votes to pass it.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said the legislation awaiting the president's approval would extend coverage to 32 million Americans who lack it, ban insurers from denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions and cut deficits by an estimated $138 billion over a decade. If realized, the expansion of coverage would include 95 percent of all eligible individuals under age 65.

I'm torn.
This is something that I think should be done.
However, we are one messed up country to be doing it.

Bittersweet, I'd say.

So tell us, why is stealing from me make you giddy with joy? Or even force me to particpate in such a scheme?

No one's forcing you. You can easily leave the country. You and Limbaugh can fly down to Cuba together! (Along with every other Republican)

The government is required to ensure life. I'd say health care falls under that category.

But death panels and a $940bn/10yrs price tag are just too much, eh?

I bet this is going to become like Social Security. Right now everyone will flip (like what's actually happening now) but in 20 or 30 years, we won't remember what it was like before without government run health care.

But you are forcing me, even though you idiots can't seem to get it thru your thick skulls, is I LIVE HERE TOO!!!!!! And what gives you the right or authority to steal?

Please tell me your are not this stupid!!!!! So in this quest to ensure life, anything goes to so even PROTECT ME FROM DEATH?

Death Panels? Well at least you admit there will be rationing of care, which knowing there are idiots like you roaming the streets, that's a bit scary!

Listen numbnuts, I don't support SS or Medicare either.

WOO HOO!!!
In your FACE conservatives.

The only thing THAT comment did was make me realize that you have no idea how to make an educated guess about the future.
Do you realize that it's bad enough that abortion happens AT ALL?
Now that the bill takes tax payer money and gives it to baby murderers, I predict (I'm no expert let me say) that people will begin to think that children are worthless. The American (uh-MER-ick-uhn) population will slowly decline because child birth is less and less common, and baby killing is more and more common. Then few Americans will be left and this country will no longer be America

The one item I don't like is that people are fined for not buying health insurance. That is incorrect regardless of any other issues. Living is completely different than driving a car on the public road.

Not sure why this is in here.

Other than that, the nation's lack of health care claims FAR MORE lives annually than the single terrorist attack under George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Karl Rove ever did. Simple fact.

Because you are a flaming idiot. This has nothing to do with health care. All Americans already have it. If you have an emergency and are dying, you are treated.

This bill is about taking a large chunk of the economy and giving government control. That will bankrupt us, so the kenyan turd can say lets scrap capitalism altogether and go socialist.

Then all his idiot voters like those in howobamagotelected.com will say, ok. Even though it is the socialism that is bringing the economy down.

I don't have any authority. Those in office do. And they as representatives have decided that it is better for the American people to be covered when it comes to their health. Plus Congress has the right to tax. Not me.

Plus, all the costs I've seen say we're paying more in Private Health Care than we would in Public HC. But that's an argument for someone else in some other time.

Please tell me your are not this stupid!!!!! So in this quest to ensure life, anything goes to so even PROTECT ME FROM DEATH?

Would you die homeless of a curable disease all because you can't afford medication or basic help? I would gladly pay a few extra bucks in taxes if it means preventing deaths of those who can't afford help.

Death Panels? Well at least you admit there will be rationing of care, which knowing there are idiots like you roaming the streets, that's a bit scary!

Perhaps you should check your hilarity unit. It was a joke. And as a "roaming idiot"(i.e., 19 year-old college student currently seeking to leave home), I'm glad I won't have to worry about stepping on a nail or contracting a deadly strain of H1N1.

Listen numbnuts, I don't support SS or Medicare either.

I'm sorry. Perhaps you'll change your mind when (and if) you can apply for them. Let's just wait and see what happens. Either that or you will grudgingly cash the checks... :chuckle:

After all, Europe is still on the map and most countries there have some form of socialized medicine.

Also, if you want to fling poo, most zoos have a monkey pen. I'm sure they'll be more than happy to participate.
