An Arab or African republic would be the republican counterpart to an Arab or African monarchy. :duh:

A "counterpart" implies a likeness, Sam. Odd choice of wording.

So what does this tell us? It tells us that the lack of freedom in Islamic Arab monarchies is there not because of the monarchy, but at best in spite of it, and at worst indifferently to it.

How and where do you draw this conclusion?

Yeah. 'Cause everyone knows that if you want to see how traditional monarchy works, you should look at revolutionary Socialist Democratic People's Republics.

You mock the use of the word "republic" just above, then play dumb and take it seriously when the Korean monarchs use it. Make up your mind. Whether you like it or not these freaks are very much a monarchy. If that's what you want, I'll pass, thank you.

America's broke, immoral, godless, and rapidly losing whatever freedoms we may have once enjoyed, less than 300 years after its founding. Democracy doesn't work.

:rotfl:

Due respect, but you're completely thick. Our problems stem from the fact that we were founded as a constitutional republic? I mean, are you playing dumb, or is this slavish fantasy world of yours interfering with reality?

In other news, did that buck-toothed balding wanker get married yet, or what?

Well, yes, I understand that, but so many of the problems with monarchy aren't possible to compromise on. It inevitably entangles personal affairs with affairs of state.

So the trillion dollar deficit we have isn't a an affair of the state? Nor the millions of state allowed murder (abortion). Nor the stealing the government does from the people? So if we had a monarch, it would only be worse?

King George has nothing on the Congress of the United States.

LOVED the dress. Classic elegance.

How nice to see a wedding dress with sleeves - I hope it sparks a trend away from the strapless wedding gowns that have dominated wedding dress styles for years now.

I wonder who the Arab Sheiks were in attendance. I would think the UAE or Kuwait ruling family.

As I was watching the stuff yesterday. They looked back at the fairytale wedding of Charles and Dianna. I hope the men can see his failure from the start. He didn't love his wife, even as Christ loved the Church. The Prince clearly has romantic feelings for the girl, but that isn't what God means by "husbands love your wives". I hope he does.

There is a likeness. The point was to compare monarchies to republics that were, other than their form of government, similar to them. To compare monarchies in the barbaric Islamic world to democracies in the enlightened West would of course lead us to the conclusion that democracy is better, but it's grossly unfair because what you're seeing as a benefit of democracy is really a better culture. To truly compare the systems, you have to look at monarchies and democracies within the same culture, time period, socioeconomic conditions, etc. When you do that, you don't see monarchies faring much worse than republics. Generally, they're somewhat better.

How and where do you draw this conclusion?

Supra.

You mock the use of the word "republic" just above,

Where?

No, they are not a monarchy, and they are certainly not a traditional Christian monarchy of the kind I promote. Just because the head of the Party groomed his son to take over, and that son is grooming his son to take over, that does not make them a monarchy. You might as well call them Nazis because they both promote government interference in the economy.

Well, yes. The majority of the American people don't seem competent to elect anyone who'll do anything good. It's just 'vote for whoever promises the most, even if it's all baloney and he can't do any of it'.

Her dress was gorgeous. Just fabulous. I watched for several hours - what a beautiful ceremony - the music was outstanding!!!

You got my vote there!! I am so tired of the sleeveless look - too many brides hunched over or no shoulders. If you are not a professional model, get sleeves.

It's hard to watch a bride continuously tug up the bodice of her dress during the ceremony, isn't it? Left side...right side...oops...left side again...:chuckle:

Thanks for the clarification.

You've never been real clear on the specifics of what you promote. And if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck...

Well, yes. The majority of the American people don't seem competent to elect anyone who'll do anything good. It's just 'vote for whoever promises the most, even if it's all baloney and he can't do any of it'.

A few items: the incompetance of the American people doesn't mean that a democratic system can't or won't work; we see these governments operate just fine the world over. And while this armchair snobbery might make you feel better, slavish devotion to a king doesn't strike me as a terribly "competant" alternative/solution. You're not jumping to conclusions here, you're leaping without a parachute.

None of those are personal issues.

King George has nothing on the Congress of the United States.

Well, other than the life-long appointment to office.

The waving of our flag is viewed differently here in the UK than in the USA. It is often associated with nationalist movements and a nauseating unquestioning patriotism.

We're not remotely as patriotic as many Americans are.
Well I'm British and I have no issue waving my flag, and no I am not a part of any nationalist movement.

I'm also staunchly patriotic.

What's so monumental about seeing some inbred transplanted Germans who don't work get hitched?

I'm apathetic to the wedding itself. I had to point out to this post however that William works as a rescue pilot for the RAF. Don't have a clue about Kate.

Yeah. Good thing Ted Kennedy was removed from power via election.

The people who voted for him could have decided they didn't like him. Apparently, they liked him enough to keep voting. And he regularly had to resubmit to their approval.

Well, now that it's all over, I'm glad they have been declared Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. There was talk of the former Kate Middleton possibly having to use the singularly awkward formulation 'Her Royal Highness Princess William of Wales'.
