Job 27:8Metaphors are comparative and those verses were not making a comparison. Therefore, they are not metaphorical. They are symbolic and symbols always point to something.
The "worm not dying" is symbolic of their NOT being annihilated and the "fire that is not quenched" is symbolic of eternal punishment.
For what hope have the godless when they are cut off, when God takes away their life?
Worm not dying is parabolic of eternal destruction.
Matthew 10:28
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in (hell / Gehenna.)
Luke 12:5
But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has (been killed / has died), has authority to throw you into (hell / Genenna.) Yes, I tell you, fear him.
Gehenna is parabolic for destruction.
