Both Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz slammed the greeting President Obama and his wife received during their historic touch-down at a Cuban airport, saying the failure of Raul Castro to personally greet them as they exited Air Force One was a slap in the face to America.
Trump tweeted of Obama’s landing: “Wow, President Obama just landed in Cuba, a big deal, and Raul Castro wasn’t even there to greet him. He greeted Pope and others. No respect.”

And during remarks in Florida, Trump elaborated, asking the crowd: “Folks, what are we doing? What are we doing?”
He then added Obama’s aides should have asked Cuban authorities who was going to meet the president at the airport.
“If they say nobody, you don’t go if nobody’s there to greet him,” he said. “We are amateur hour, folks. Obama should have turned around the plane and left.”
Castro, who doesn’t make frequent public appearances, nevertheless met Pope Francis personally at the airport in September, as well as Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill just a few weeks ago.
Cruz had even harsher words for Obama, saying the White House chief doesn’t even have any business visiting Cuba.
In a tweet, he wrote, alongside a link to his opinion piece in Politico: “I have a word for the people of Cuba who will witness the gaudy spectacle in Havana: America has not forgotten you.”
And his Politico piece spoke to the prisoners in Cuba whose biggest crime was criticizing the government.

“[P]olitical prisoners languishing in dungeons across the island will hear this message: Nobody has your back. You’re alone with your tormentors. The world has forgotten about you,” he wrote. “They will not be on TV, rubbing elbows with the Obamas or left-wing politicians like Nancy Pelosi. There will be no mojitos at the U.S. Embassy for them. Raul Castro denies their very existence.”
Meanwhile, Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., pointed out Cuba’s arrest of human-rights activist Elizardo Sanchez, just hours before Obama was set to visit, along with several others who were engaging in protests against the regime.
“Now, on the eve of the president’s misguided trip to Cuba, the Castro regime arrested Elizardo Sanchez, a leading and peaceful human-rights activist with whom President Obama was scheduled to meet during his trip,” Cotton said, the Associated Press reported.
Obama is set to meet with Castro Monday.
“This is a historic visit and a historic opportunity,” Obama said, while greeting staff at the new U.S. Embassy in Havana, AP reported.
