I just heard about this case

where the parents (with the approval of other "adults") beat one of their children to death as part of a "church" ritual...

the "church" was called... something like.. well, it had the name Word in it... as in Word of God..

yeh... we all know about the psgs in the Bible that tell u to kill your children.. I think it was b/c he wouldn't confess all his sins??

I know it had something to do with confessing his sins...

Wow...

And you people (many posters here) want to attack us Catholics all the time.. over confession?

Hmmm...

Anyway, this is what happens when people are far from the Original Church... they get caught up in their... (as in human) bogus interpretations of the "the Word"

Horrifying and disgusting beyond words.
Two teenage brothers were brutally beaten in church — one fatally — in an effort by their parents, sister and other members to get them to confess their sins, police said Wednesday in a case involving what neighbors described as an insular congregation that didn't let its children out to play.

Police said spiritual "counseling" at the Word of Life church turned into an hours-long attack Sunday night in which Lucas Leonard, 19, and his 17-year-old brother, Christopher, were pummeled with fists, authorities said. They suffered injuries to the abdomen, genitals, back and thighs.

Eventually, Lucas stopped breathing and relatives took him early Monday to a hospital, where he died, police said. Authorities went to the church and found his younger brother, who was hospitalized in serious condition.

"Both brothers were subjected to physical punishment over the course of several hours, in hopes that each would confess to prior sins and ask for forgiveness," Police Chief Michael Inserra said.

He said investigators have not determined what the supposed sins were.
The brothers' parents, Bruce and Deborah Leonard, were charged with manslaughter in Lucas' death. Four other adults were charged with assault in the younger

brother's beating, including Sarah Ferguson, 33, the victims' sister.

This is what comes from the teaching that we must confess our sins in order to be forgiven. Forgiveness is freely given to those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and His work on the cross. Here is the "confessing" you need to do.

Romans 10: 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Mat 6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

Jas 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Unless you were specifically talking about the idea of confessing sins to a priest. (but even then I wouldn't say that reasonably leads to what we see in this story)

You are using this case to compare catholic and protestant churches ?
You should stop trying to be a martyr for your one and only church, you're way off base.

Not one of those verses speaks of the Gospel of Salvation.

Mat 6:12 is pre-cross so not new covenant.

Jas 5:16 only talks about confessing wrong to each other to right wrongs.

1jn 1:9 is what happens when one comes to Christ.

There is no new covenant passage that supports confessing sin to God in order to gain forgiveness.

I was only posting those to combat the idea that confession somehow leads to the awful story we saw. One cultish church that beats their members info confession doesn't mean confession is bad.

The theology is unimportant.
I say, the church should be disbanded - it is corrupt.
The Pastor and other elders should be banned for life from serving in any capacity in a church - they were responsible for teaching their members to beat their children to death.
All those who stood by while this was going on should be added to the child offenders register or whatever you have there.
Those who did it or assisted in it should be stuck in jail for manslaughter.
When this sort of thing can happen in a church, the issue is wider than the individuals concerned.

According to this story, the father alleged the boys molested other children in the church. The CNN video was interesting because in it a police officer implies the boys are victims because those allegations are supposedly untrue, as if they wouldn't be victims if they had been child molesters.

Yeah. Good point. So many people are trying to find any which way to get out of their own guilt.
