What possible political gain could Trump hope to profit from for deliberately downplaying Covid-19?

No one has had a good answer as to how Trump thought he could profit from deliberately downplaying Covid-19.

He said that the reason he downplayed it was so he would not cause a panic in the country and no one has given another reasonable reason why he downplayed it.

Ultimately, he couldn't. He lied about it but now those lies are on record so hopefully people won't be so gullible as to trust the narcissist to a second term of office. He had ample opportunity to address the issue before being forced to declare a national emergency and enact lockdown measures after previously lying about it all being "under control".
