Some TV series I've watched on Netflix and Amazon recently, and liked:

Justified - redneck cops and robbers, but with excellent actors and good writing (dialogue, especially). Walton Goggins is excellent as Boyd Crowder. But the whole cast is good.
I absolutely loved that show!
But I missed that last season because no longer had cable tv.
(was on antenna only)

If you haven't seen it, watch The International. Topical story with one of the best shootouts I've ever seen. Great visuals on a world wide stage, from Turkey to New York.
Saw it and liked it. I even liked the ending even though it left you with a feeling of just how small and insignificant you really are.

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb

Comedy/fantasy.
If you liked the others, you will like this sequel.

My favorite line in movie:
"What kind of haunted hootenanny is this?"

Predestination

Sci-fy action suspense starring Ethan Hawke.

Wow! This movie is a mind blower.
I had never heard of it or remember seeing any promos of it.

It has to do with time travel. But I don't know what other movie to compare it to.
This one stands alone.
Makes it real hard to determine which came first, the chicken or the egg.

This movie sets a new bar for "who's who".

Spoiler
Jane, her lover John, their baby girl, the agent, and the Fizzle bomber are all the same person.
Gotta watch to see how that happens!

Me too.

Although I was a little taken back that Disney was making the evil villain of a children's story into a nice person.

I think children should know that there are evil folks out there that don't turn good.
But at the same time, I think children should also know that evil folks can change.

So, no matter which version of the evil villain one reads about, both could be true.

Some TV series I've watched on Netflix and Amazon recently, and liked:

Boardwalk Empire - Steve Buscemi runs Atlantic City during prohibition. Steve Buscemi is fantastic, and the period detail is very good.

Justified - redneck cops and robbers, but with excellent actors and good writing (dialogue, especially). Walton Goggins is excellent as Boyd Crowder. But the whole cast is good.

The Good Wife - it's another lawyer drama, yes, but with excellent actors and really great writing. It's the 'gold standard' for TV drama. I'm hooked.

The Fosters - standard family drama, but with modern PC twists (gay parents, adopted and bio. kids, etc.). Yet it works for some reason. Good young actors playing the kids, and honest problems for them to grapple with from the writers. The writing is good, but could be better.

Longmire - a modernized version of "Gunsmoke". Not as good as the old Gunsmoke, but not bad, either. If you liked the old westerns (I do), this will fit the bill.

Sons of Anarchy - anarchy in that you can't tell the good guys from the bad guys, because they're all bad guys. Except when they're good. Occasionally. Nevertheless, I found it to be an interesting dynamic, with some very interesting characters.

The Inexplicable Universe - a short series of talks by Neil Degrasse-Tyson. This is an excellent series about the limitations of man's knowledge of the universe, and the wonder that inspires. Any atheist who thinks science has it all worked out really ought to watch this, because Neil has a whole 'nother think coming, for them.

House of Cards - an intense political drama, very well acted and well written. A bit dark, and dour, but nevertheless it's oddly fascinating.

Rake - an Aussie dramedy with a classic Aussie 'larrikin' as the quintessential good/bad scoundrel and hero. Richard Roxburgh does a great job playing Cleaver Greene, a bottom-feeding barrister who defends the likes of people who are charged with cannibalism and beastiality. Lots of wonderful guest stars to add to the fun.

Foyle's War - a detective show set in England during WW2. And an excellent series with good actors, excellent writing, and detailed historic sets and costumes. What TV should be!

Magic City - a bit of a 'Madmen' copycat, set in a Florida seaside hotel. Yet the period costumes, sets, and general early 60s ambiance keep it interesting.
I really liked Justified. My wife and I have the DVDs except for the last season which we have on DVR. Walking Dead and Justified are my favorite TV shows.

Magic City was a favorite of mine because of the main Magic City star Jeffrey Dean Morgan. I'll watch anything he's in.

Longmire was also a favorite of mine. I hope it's not cancelled.

The Heat

Action/comedy starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.

Bullock is a special agent with a superb record, and the ego and arrogance to go along with it. She rather enjoys showing up other cops and agents by pointing out how much better she is than they.
She is a stickler for procedure.

McCarthy is a local street wise detective. And procedure isn't high on her priority list!

The two get partnered on a special case. The clash between them has some hilarious moments.

I gotta say, McCarthy is a welcome addition to TV and movies.
She's a hoot!!!!

The Pyramid

A pyramid is found buried that is at least a thousand years older than the others. This pyramid is huge and is unlike the others in that this one only has three sides instead of four.

Once the exploration team gets in, they find that it is a maze of rooms and hallways with booby traps and shifting walls and floors.
They soon find out that this pyramid was built to keep anything that enters from ever leaving.

The premise of the movie was interesting. But the movie was rather dull and predictable.
It's basically a couple of hours of watching folks move through dark rooms and tunnels, with some "creatures" inside that prey on them.

Not worth the time in my opinion.

You can get it on Amazon Prime via internet. That's how I watch TV these days … no satellite of cable for me. DSL and a Roku box and I have lots of TV to watch, without the commercials.

The Roku box that connects your TV to the internet costs about $50. With that you can choose from many, many internet 'channels', some free, some pay-per-view, and some subscription. I subscribe to Netflix @ $8/mo., and Amazon Prime for $9/mo. With just those two I can watch all kinds of TV and movies, without ads. I can also rent movies for $4 from several Roku channels. And I can watch YouTube movies and videos with it. Also listen to music via Pandora, and others. Get news as well.

I pay $15 bucks a month and watch what I want, when I want, with no ads.

That's for me! :)

The Gambler

Starring Mark Wahlburg.

He borrows money from a loan shark. Gambles with it and loses it all ..... quickly.
Then he goes to another loan shark to borrow the amount of money that he owes the 1st loan shark.
But he doesn't take the money to the 1st loan shark and gambles until it is all gone, which he loses quickly.
He then goes to a 3rd loan shark and does the same.

He even goes to his mother for $260,000 to pay off the loan sharks.
But again, instead of paying the loans sharks, he gambles until he loses it all (again very quickly).

To tell the truth, this movie puzzled me.
I couldn't really tell if he was actually hooked on gambling or was just doing it because he could.

If anyone else has seen this movie, tell me what you think.

American Sniper

Finally got to see it.
Loved it!
Cried like a baby at the end.

Frailty (2001) is an older movie that I forgot I had seen before. I watched it again recently and found myself liking this movie more now than I did at first.

A man confesses to an FBI agent his family's story of how his religious fanatic father's visions lead to a series of murders to destroy supposed "demons."

Director: Bill Paxton
Stars: Bill Paxton, Matthew McConaughey and Powers Boothe

My rating would be a 4.0 out of 5. I typically don't like this type of movie but this one I did. Well acted, written and directed.
