Neither. He simply made a joke. And as Muslim is not a race it was about her being Asian, though her being Muslim was related to the context.

Not to sound like I get the joke - but
I had a Japanese friend who called "Lori" "Roly" and stifled chuckles would go all around since "Lori" wasn't what you'd call slender...
I think the Japanese friend wasn't missing the joke either, though so...hmmm.
