The heat pump came with the house. when I moved here I thought I would die in a year from hepatitis C. Then I was cured by a new drug after 12 years of severe illness. In that time I lost my husband and the better part if middle-age. Not too happy about it

and lucky in many ways. It is old age that scares me more than death. Any saved person should not fear death. What is scary is living like those old ladies who are in wheelchairs shaking and addle-minded but don't die.

Only unbelievers fear death.

Your T-stat is shot. Some good ones only cost 40 and can be snapped in by the average person.

In the meanwhile, use other 220V sources. For ex., put a metal utensil in the door of your conventional oven and set it on low, which is usually 170, and after several hours you have nice smooth heat for that area, at half the price of 110V outlets. I have also used metal in an oven like that as a heat 'sink' (absorb and hold) but make sure it is convenient to remove when you need to do real backing. (I used a 10 lb weightlift).

I have a 30 yr old heat pump in a damp forest all winter and it is great. However, as a category, heat pumps have many, many moving parts, which is always a downside. Radiant propane heat is best because there are no moving parts (at your house!) to supply it, and radiant is better than forced because of the moving parts that are needed to push air. Except that it can't be filtered.

I would rather buy a smaller house of condo and have gas heat.

With a house, one is more free to make changes, such as winterize the heck out of the house and then buy a gas heater rated for a house twice as large. Bigger gas heaters are not much more expensive and they last a long time.

I am much too old to fool around with any 'do-it-yourself' projects.
