Guns take the blame but what about antidepressant drugs?

it makes me wonder how many "crazy" folks throughout history went "unmedicated" - :help:

A lot. For fun some time just scroll through a list of the most influential world leaders in history and look how many were somewhere between slightly manic and completely nuts

I think it complex enough to review on a a case by case basis, what we dont see is the list of lives saved or remarkably improved by anti depressant drugs.

If you point is that America over simplify s mental health issues and over prescribes certain drugs and does not look at none pharmaceutical treatments enough I would be prone to agree.

If its that ant depressants are bad for teenagers and should never be prescribed, I think you are looking at a subset of the information.

Imo the solution is holding doctors more accountable for anti-depressants/psychotics than they are currently. There are millions who can benefit from them but millions more who either are better off with non-drug treatment or not needing much of any treatment at all. Some psychiatrists just give out these meds almost automatically.

But short of closely monitoring the current and former patients of any one doctor over a given period of time, which would mean a lot of paperwork and time spent, I dont think it can be done.

Anti-depressants/psychotics should rarely be given within the first couple of trips to a psychiatrist. It seems safer that non-mood-altering substances should be a sort of last resort

That is a fair point lets look at all elements.

You know i'm a big advocate of low gun ownership societies, but id agree its tends to be combinations of factors that create high murder rates.

However doing that does not make American relationship with firearms either normal or healthy.

Obviously gun control is needed to an extent. There should be extensive background checks, no automatics or military-style weaponry for civilians, and I personally have no problem with requiring gun owners to show they can store their firearms safely.

Beyond that is unnecessary and actually does way more harm than good. If you look at the results of international gun bans and the crime rate immediately after then you'll see that, outside of Luxembourg and a couple of other European states, violent crime soars. It's because criminals often have to get weapons illegally anyway, so banning legal ammunitions sales doesn't affect them. It only keeps responsible owners from getting them. With no fear of being shot back at, criminals aren't as hesitant to do their thing

I don't advocate having relationships with firearms...They tend to be cold and unfeeling....almost machine-like. Not good candidates for committed relationships. :plain:

Did you know that these were all military grade? Exactly what constitutes "military grade"?

How did a murderous co-pilot somehow inspire yet another gun thread? Seriously, the mind boggles.

Well if it's been converted to single shot, it's not really military grade anymore. I think that weapon would be okay as long as it was checked with officials.

That looks like a normal .222

:plain: Wow...I even gave you a wikipedia link.

Enjoy your gun porn, guys. This thread's found a shark and jumped.

 For the record, Chief Brody (portrayed by the great Roy Scheider) is indeed using a "Military Grade Firearm" to shoot the bad shark. The M1 Garand, chambered in .30-06 Springfield, was actually cited by General George Patton as being "the greatest battle implement ever devised".

Even when battling big fish. :plain:

personally, i see a definite correlation between mental illness and violence and medications, even "self-medicating". it's a huge problem evidenced by school shootings, mass killings, random outbursts and truly psychotic behavior. mild mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, anti-social, paranoia are usually tied to some form of "substance abuse" accompanied with the meds and the "stigma" of being labelled "crazy' or unstable, leads to silence, unreported issues or completely wrong treatment and support. what ever happened to dealing with your inner thoughts, feelings, fears, anxiety etc. on your own (not you), everybody wants a pill if they feel a little down ? periods of "depression", bad moods, low confidence etc, are normal parts of life. somehow in the last several decades they have a pill for "anything". it's FLOURIDE ! just kidding, but it's alarming what the statistics show, and that's only a portion of reality i'm afraid - :patrol:
I've been on anti-anxiety meds since 1995. Otherwise, it feels like I'm having a heart attack. What made me at ease about taking anti-anxiety meds was my boss was taking the same meds I was. We were both into guns too. Recently, my doctor put me on an anti-depressant too. I think that's because of the type 2 diabetes, drastic changes in diet, and a horrible boss at work. I've been put in a position with no experience and I am being rated against people with years and years of experience. I have no desire to be a paper shuffler at this stage of my career. This is not how envisioned life before retirement.

Anyway, I'm a non-violent person and that has remained the case for my entire life. The anti-anxiety meds helped temper the side effects of the epilepsy meds. At times, I'm a bit more "curt" in speech and writing than say three or four years ago. Now that I'm taking an anti-depressant, I can laugh again without forcing it or using sarcasm. The only mental illness in my family has been All the females on my mother's side of the family. But that's another subject.
