You are adding the word Sabbath into some of those texts to fit with what you believe rather than what the Word of God says:

Lev 23

Read all of Leviticus 23 in context and you will see that is what you are doing:

What is a holy convocation?

A Holy Convocation, also known as a Holy Assembly was a day that was most solemn when no regular, or servile, or ordinary, or laborious work was done.

A Sabbath is day of complete rest when no work of any kind could be done and a holy convocation, or sacred assembly also took place.

Excellent question :) and one that many get confused about because of these verses and other reasons:

Matthew 26:17
On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?"

Mark 14:12
On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus' disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?"

Luke 22:7
Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread arrived, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed.

Jesus was crucified on the the 14th, the same day (and time) the lambs were being killed. Therefore we know from this (and other verses) that Jesus made the preparations for the Last Supper the day before on the 13th. The last supper was not the Passover meal. The Passover meal is prepared on the 14th and eaten after sunset on the 15th. The Last Supper was a separate feast taken by some Jews in recognition of Esther's last meal before she fasted the three days over Passover, before going to king Artaxerxes:

Esther 4:16
"Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish."

Esther fasted over Passover along with ALL the other Jews in Susa. I believe the Essenes celebrated this feast and partook in this fast and that the water carrier whom Jesus told the disciples to follow to the upper room was also an Essene, because carrying water was a woman's role but the Essenes were a male closed order and had to carry their own water.

NOW!! Mark and Luke however can make it sound like the Festival of Unleavened Bread was on the day that the lambs were sacrificed, but it does not say that in actual fact. Look at the Interlinear:

What it is merely mentioning is the fact that lambs are scarified on the Feast of Unleavened Bread, not that it was that actual day. See!

Therefore to answer your question; 'Was the first day of Unleavened Bread a Sabbath?' The answer is yes and no because it was on the 13th of Aviv from the time of Esther onwards but it was on the 15th originally which is a Sabbath.

From the time the Jews returned from Babylon the 13th was considered the first day of unleavened bread because of the celebration of Esther's last supper. However, this became less notable as Passover was reinstated and the first day of the feast of unleavened bread soon reverted to the 15th because that was what it had always been as it says it in Leviticus:

Leviticus 23:6
On the fifteenth day of that month the LORD's Festival of Unleavened Bread begins; for seven days you must eat bread made without yeast.

However, a remnant would continue to honour the feast and fast of Esther right up until Jesus' time. The Year Jesus died Jesus also took part in this feast and fast as He knew He would not be able to eat the Passover meal.

Esther Feast and Fast was a prophetic shadow picture that was fulfilled by Jesus. Jesus fasted over the same three days before going to God, just like Esther fasted before going to the King. (Jesus actually fulfilled 11 feasts and Holy Days and there is only 1 Feast left for Jesus to fulfil - Tabernacles).

However, not everyone has forgotten, look at the 13th to 15th on Torah Calendar where it says 'Original fast of Esther':

Did Jesus observe the Passover?

Not that year because he was the fulfilment of the Passover lamb, which were being killed at the same time He was being crucified on the 14th Aviv.

The lambs were being slaughtered from 9am to 3pm. The last lamb to be killed was the one specially selected by the high priest himself back on day 10 Aviv (the day Jesus made his Triumphal entry) from the fields of Bethlehem. The same place Jesus was born.

Every year the high priest would kill this last lamb at 3pm and cry out; "It is finished" just when Jesus our true high priest (and king) was crying these same words in fulfilment of this prophetic feast.

The lambs were then all put into hundreds of ovens up on the temple mount. This had to be done before the sun set, just as Jesus also had to be put into the tomb before sunset.

The last Supper (the feast of Esther) was eaten with the Passover lambs a day early, therefore it was the Passover meal but just a day early from Passover night.

No, I am surmising but it was not the 14th/15th when they sat down to eat the Last Supper, as Jesus was in the tomb by sunset on the 14th. It was required that the Israelite's chose a lamb on the 10th and I don't know of any reason why the Essenes would not have done this and at least eaten the Passover lamb early. They may not have eaten lamb. I am not dogmatic about that but I am instant that scripture shows the last supper was prepared on the 13th and they sat down to eat at sunset.

While the synoptic gospels say it was the Passover meal John's Gospel calls it the 'evening meal' and that it was before the Passover festival:

John 13
1 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

John's Gospel has by far the most detail about that night as he was right next Jesus at that meal; 5 chapters worth.

Did Jesus have the authority to establish a new Passover observance?
The point of the Passover was not just a remembrance for the Israelite's of what God had done by setting them free from Pharaoh but was also a prophetic picture of the coming Messiah's death that would set mankind free from the bondage of sin. Jesus was not establishing a new Passover observance but was rather fulfilling the sacrificial law that the Passover lamb represented;

Matthew 5:17
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Is the NT Passover based on an animal or himself?
It really is the OT Passover because by the time Jesus fulfilled the Passover feast we were now into NT times but the Passover is base on both the animal and Jesus the Messiah:

John 1:29
The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Yes, if you mean that the first born are the those who are born of the spirit, i.e. Born again Christians who are the first to enter Heaven as the first fruits of the harvest of mankind and that Jesus, as the Passover lamb, shed His blood which saves us, just as the Passover lambs blood save the Israelite's on the fist Passover.

I can agree with that connotation, if that is what you mean. I would also agree that Jesus was establishing a new covenant that superseded all the old covenants, and I agree that the Eucharist is a type of new Passover observance if that is what you meant?
