FEELING ONE'S AGE

I just turned 71 and for almost all of my life I experienced perfect health. But two years ago a tumor was found on my adrenal gland and many complications happened when the doctors attempted to remove it. After the operation I was in intensive care for more than a month. The doctors told my wife that I died three times and came back to life. They also told her that I was going to die for good shortly and that a corpse had to be removed from the hospital within 24 hours so she was checking out what to do with my body.

Needless to say I survived!

Treasure your good health while you still have it because the landscape of old folks is littered with sad tales about declining health. For some reason I thought that I was exempt from these things but now I realize that no one is exempt!

Good to see you back about the joint.

On getting older...I decided to meet the edge of that iceberg by redirecting my life. I'll spend the third act up to my knees in P - 3 students, teaching and encouraging them regarding the joy of learning and mastery as with my Jack. :D And a while back I became more involved in our church and community. I think, watching my dad, that's the best way to approach it. Keep your mind active and your keyster out of the chair as much as you can. Or, in short, live. It's what life is made for, after all. Stay engaged and optimistic, and share all of it actively with God. That's the ticket to contentment.

Good advice!

Unfortunately, in my case I didn't know that I had a tumor on my adrenal gland, much less that it caused severe depression and panic attacks for many years prior to taking it out. It is impossible to remain optimistic under those circumstances.

Before the operation I was having panic attacks at least twice a week and those attacks are devastating to a person's sanity besides being terrifying! And to make it worse I was not aware of what caused them.

The Bible says in Hebrews 9:27 "And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment," That word, "appointed" is a key word in that verse. It means that a time to die was previously chosen/designated for all of us. To me this means that no matter what we think, say or do, that day is written in stone. God has already in "time past" chosen the day that, we as a human being must die.

Actually, it's an appointment, already established for us, individually. This doesn't mean that we shouldn't take care of ourselves, after all, if we "live right," exercise a bit, don't drink too excess, take unnecessary chances, smoke, etc, we might just have it easier as we go through our "Twilight years." It also behooves us to take care of our bodies as best we can and know how. If we see/feel something that's not normal, we ought to visit a Doctor and have it taken care of. That's our responsibility to our own body. They say, "The moment we're born, is the moment we start to die."

We only have a few preacious years to live our lives, therefore, it's in our best interest to choose wisely how we live it. Obviously, we can't avoid that "Appointed day," it's going to catch up with us sooner or later. As human beings we're extremely fragile. I'll mention, but a few of examples of that; The Martial Artist and Actor, Bruce Lee was in tip-top physical shape and 32 years old, yet, it only took a tiny pill to end his life. He happened to be allergic to that pill and it killed him. Another example would be, Jim Fixx, who was credited with helping start America's fitness revolution, popularizing the sport of running.

He died of a Heart attack while running, he was 52 years old at the time. Look at the actor, Kirk Douglas who played Spartacus in the movie by the same name. As of date, he's 101 years old and still with us. The Bible states in Exodus 20:12 "Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee." Now, I'll admit this verse can have two different meanings, I'll only mention one of those meanings and leave the other one up to your own subjective opinion. The literal sense of the verse appears to be a "Commandment with a Promise." In other words, if we or they in the case of Israel give due respect to our Parents, God will allow us to live a longer life.

Compared to eternity, we as human beings are only given a few years of life on earth. It's up to us how we desire to live that life. Life is made up of choices.

If you will look at the verse closely it is not the "time" which is appointed but instead it is that "people will die once" that is appointed.

"And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,"

I can relate. I'll be 49 in 2 months and I see life in stages now, each one seemingly shorter than the last. It begins to sink in how little time we have here and I think more of heavenly things. I always have, more so than others but even more the older I get. I am at peace with death for the most part but I pray for minimal suffering. I have some medical issues but I am blessed compared to so many people.

Sometimes I think about the short time we have and how a small group of people converged on TOL for periods of our life. I'm fond of everyone here, each in a different way, and even though I don't always show it, I love you all. I suppose I'll always log in here if it's up and running.

I feel the same way about our odd little family here on TOL.

You brought tears to my eyes, PJ. :cloud9:

I can resonate with the creeping age and all that it brings. I will be 65 this February and finally a Medicare recipient. Have a left main coronary artery that is 69% blocked and my caridiologist is frustrated by my refusal for a bypass. So I regularly have to intake oxygen to avoid fluid build up in my lungs compounding a heart failure diagnosis. Add to that psoriatic arthritis since age 36 that has debilitated me to the point that I can barely use a computer mouse or walk any real distances without agony. So each new year for me is a gift, knowing the end is near and my call home to glory but a whisper away, per the will of God. I believe I have run the good race and fought the good fight, and welcome what is in store for me. Indeed, on late and lonely nights like this one, I even yearn for this.

My wife of 36 years has been bed-ridden with physical and mental disorders for over 13 years now. I am her primary care-giver and must be near her bedside 24/7. My son helps watch over his Mother when I must run errands, cook, or other chores. She is often overcome with psychoses; fighting imagined demons. I spend most of my days toiling away at a small table near her bed so I can look over her. Occasionally, that pretty girl who once annoyed me to no end by talking to me uninvited (the nerve!) while waiting in line at the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland (when we first met) returns to me for a few precious moments of lucidity. There you are, I say, to the woman who makes me want to be a better man every day. Thanks be to God for sharing in His abundance daily.

So when a couple of months have passed and AMR seems absent from TOL and my other internet haunts, you will know that he is now present with the Lord and explaining to all the open theists and Arminians in Heaven how exactly they came to be there. :AMR:

AMR

My heart weeps for you, brother, and I thank the Lord for the time you share with us all here. My prayers are with you and your dear wife.....we will meet one day on the other side. :)

Age is a matter of the mind. If you think that you are old you are old. I retired at your age and got bored. so, I took the states 4 hour home inspector course and passed with flying colors. I was a home inspector for 9 years and inspected over 900 homes. I went up on every roof of every home that I inspected. I would still be doing it if my knees had not given out. So I retired again at 76 and am bored again. Think young.

I would have you focus on the word "Appointed" which is why I used that verse, to which I added a "Caveat." Please re-read my post with that in mind.

My knees, lower back, and spine took the brunt of my activities in my 30s. It didn't help that I really enjoyed a copious amount of Dancing at the Clubs in my 30s. In the later 1980s, I spent most Fridays and a good share of Saturdays, as well, at a Nightclub known as "The Hop." The Hop was located in Fountain Valley California and owned by the singing duo, "The Righteous Brothers."(Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield.) I used to see Bill Medley there on occasion and sometimes he and his partner, Bobby Hatfield would perform there. I got a lot of Cardio-exercise at that point in my life. I was divorced in 1985 and never re-married. Today, my Ex-Wife and I are good Friends. We share a Son together and he's married with two Children. We all live in the same State. I never thought I'd leave California, because, I came to California from Illinois when I was five years old and spent most of my life in "The Land of the Fruits and the Nuts" (aka; California.)

I left there in 2008 after my Mom went to be with the Lord. It appears I left just in time, because, when I left, "Arnold Schwarzenegger" was Governor and now, Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown is the Governor. California has become a "Cesspool" of total madness and evil. I'll just mention that in passing. My Mom was, what you could call a "Diehard." She finally passed away at 81 years old, but, not before suffering from a few deadly ailments that would kill a "Very Strong, athletic, and young Male," in short order.

Allow me to "List" those Ailments below;
1) Sepsis.
2) Peritonitis. (This one killed Houdini)
3) Kidney Failure.
4) Arthritis.
5) A ruptured Bladder.(She ended up with a Colostomy Bag with this one.)
6) Blind in one Eye.
7) A Stroke that would have decimated a Water Buffalo.
8) She had a Heart Pacemaker. (She had it replaced a second time even though the Doctor said; "She won't need a second." Boy, was he wrong? He didn't realize who he was dealing with.
9) I believe she had "High Blood Pressure, as well.
10)She had a feeding tube placed in her Stomach the very day she died.

She lived through all of these "Medical Adversities" yet, it wasn't her "Appointed time to go." Then, one morning she passed away in a Hospital bed. What's to be learned from this? Well, I suppose we have to look to the fact that, God has a "Day Appointed" for us to "pass away" and nothing, nor anybody can do anything to change that "Appointment." We all, have an "Appointment to keep." We just don't know, where and when?
