The PRIMARY reason for selecting the site for the Temple was the abundant supply of fresh running water.
Gihon Spring is a SIPHON SPRING. A siphon spring acts much like "Old Faithful" geyser. When the source cavity is full, the siphon brings forth water, under pressure, at the exit of the spring. When the source empties, the siphon is broken and the flow of water stops. There are only about 12 siphon springs on earth.
The "siphon effect" was broken due to an earthquake, and so Gihon Spring is now an ordinary spring, a mere trickle, and the water is no longer pure.
Example of a siphon spring:
PS: There are no springs on Haram al-Sharif (ie: "Temple Mount")
