Newsweek's claim is that the news was "mostly false". You know what you get when you add a lie to truth? A lie. Part truth and part lie is a lie. Period. It's no different that adding poison to healthy food. You get poison as the end product. You eat healthy food that's been poisoned? You get poisoned as a result.
Now let's look at what actually happened.

The facts are that India banned the sale of the vaccine because Phizer would not do safety an immunization studies on the vaccine. Doesn't that just make you want to run right down and take that vaccine? The company behind it is refusing to do safety studies at the behest of the second largest nation on earth. Phizer actually withdrew their application over the whole idea of studies. Why would a company abandon a market of over a billion people over doing safety studies? Something tells me there is a skunk in the woodpile. This really stinks. Phizer is hiding something that they know and we do not when they walk away from a market that size rather than do safety studies.
As Phizer is closely associated with Bill Gates and the fact that India has in the past kicked the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation out of the country because of the unethical shenanigans the foundation pulled in India which did major harm to Indian citizens says India has not forgotten that behavior. I say they are correct. No one in their right mind trusts someone who has in the past killed Indian citizens under the guise of doing good.
