I think the points about rhetoric, lack of reason, and hatred of compromise are spot on. Though I think some of that is true for all of politics lately.

Compromise is in fact the problem. It is a problem I have with Reagan. He believed in the best in people, and foolishly took Democrats at their word. The problem is the Republican party moving left. Donald Trump is a by-product of the problem.

Today it is less than 2%.

Not even close. More like 12%.
