Excavations Reveal King Herod Didn't Complete Construction of Jerusalem's Western Wall

Recent archeological excavations in Jerusalem show that, contrary to popular understanding, King Herod was not solely responsible for constructing the Western Wall.

Israel's Antiques Authority announced Wednesday that the discovery of a mikveh (ritual bath) alongside Jerusalem's ancient drainage channel challenges the conventional archaeological perception that Herod built the wall in its entirety, saying it is now evident that construction was completed at least 20 years after Herod's death (believed to be in 4 BCE).

The excavations, directed by IAA archaeologist Eli Shukron with assistance from Professor Ronny Reich of the University of Haifa, revealed three clay oil lamps of a type that was common in the first century CE as well as seventeen identifiable bronze coins.

The clay oil lamps and bronze coins were found when archeologists sifted through soil removed from inside the sealed mikveh.

According to Dr. Donald Ariel, curator of the IAA numismatic collection, the latest four coins were struck by the Roman procurator of Judea, Valerius Gratus, sometime around 17 or 18 CE – about 20 years after Herod's death.

"This bit of archaeological information illustrates the fact that the construction of the Temple Mount walls and Robinson’s Arch was an enormous project that lasted decades and was not completed during Herod’s lifetime," said the IAA, adding that the find confirms descriptions by the Jewish historian Josephus, which state that it was only during the reign of King Agrippa II (Herod’s great-grandson) that the work was finished."

NOTE: Coins were found UNDER the foundation stones of the wall.

All very interesting, but it doesn't turn it into "the wrong wall"
The Wall around the Temple and the Temple was completely destroyed by the Romans by 135 A.D., so that no sign of the Temple could be detected.
Sorry, but it's the WRONG location. The "Temple Mount" was the site of the Roman Antonia Fortress. God is not mocked, He keeps things "hidden" until the "last days".
Showing ignorance of your own "Holy Land" and your own history doesn't bode well for you.

The article that you quoted did not say that. It refers to the dating of the wall.
You apparently find it difficult to bring specific evidence to support your specific claims.

Somebody is clearly showing ignorance here. But it ain't me.

Mr. Beam. have you bothered to read your own link? It refers only to the dating of the wall.

What is the source of water for the Haram al Sharif?

What are you saying this demonstrates? What vital thing is being hidden for some 'last days'? Haven't you ever read Lk 19 and 21 about all this? It all refers to the DofJ.

What is the source of water for the Haram al Sharif?

There is no natural (ie: "living water") on Haram al Sharif. This would immediately disqualify Haram al Sharif as the site of a Temple. :duh:
David conquered the Jebusite stronghold and purchased the threshing floor as the site of the Temple.
Gihon Spring is the natural source of "living" water in the City of David, where the Temple was built.
It takes a tremendous amount of water to wash away all the blood from the sacrifices in the temple. No water=no Temple -- Haram al Sharif (aka: Antonia Fortress) has no water

The fanciful idea that the temple was built over the Gihon spring is a view popularized by fringe Christian groups that have a history of teaching rather bizarre doctrine. (Herbert W. Armstrong splinter group) which although is interesting and graphic, is simply a mythical view of the city of David that never existed.

From documentaries I have read, the visible part of the wall has 24 rows of stones.
But there are 19 more rows of stone beneath the surface (not visible).
Some of the stones beneath the surface are over 100 tons.

So there were several rows of stones that didn't get smashed down by the Roman army.

The western wall is not part of the Temple itself. It is a supporting wall for teh raised platform that the Temple was built on.

When talking about the temple, it can include the entire enclosure that includes the temple building itself.
No animals were killed inside the temple building itself, but they were killed at the temple.

The Roman Antonia Fortress housed 6,000 troops plus about 4,000 support staff.
It occupied the entirety of "Haram al Sharif". The Temple was located in the
City of David, which is SOUTH of "Haram al Sharif". The "mis-identification"
of the so-called "Temple Mount" as the location of the Temple, has to be the
greatest archeological blunder of all history.
Only extreme stubbornness and pride prevents the acknowledgement of this critical error.

But...but...but Jesus said NOT ONE stone would be left standing upon another in all of Jerusalem!!!1

Possibly.
Then again, it may just be that Dome of the Rock sits right atop for the very reason that the temple doesn't need to be there yet.

Only pride and stubbornness prevents the Temple from being built immediately, as the City of David is wholly under Israeli control. The Temple Institute has already trained the Kohanim, produced their garments, produced all the implements of the Temple/Tabernacle, etc.

I've heard that for years now.
