A lot of people stopped going to church. A lot of kids got molested. A lot of changes in the liturgy. A lot of confusion in what to believe.

A lot of lapsed Catholics used it as an excuse to stop going. Also not just a Catholic thing, a lot of non-Catholics also stopped going to church.
