how do I upload a custom avatar?

click on "User cp" near the top of the page. On the side of the page under settings and options click "Edit Avatar". That will take you to the appropriate page. The third box on the page is for uploading your custom avatar. You may have to wait until you have a certain number of posts made I can't remember but try it now.
