I'm assuming Private messages?

Choose from your list, the boxes on the right corresponding to the post you want to delete.

Down at the bottom right on your private messages page it says:

Selected Messages: Move to folder
The blue down arrow will let you choose Selected Messages: Delete

By notifications I mean when I am notified that someone has quoted me or asked me a question.

You get notifications for every thread you have subscribed to.
You need to unsubscribe the thread, and then you will no longer get notifications.
