The Purpose of Preaching in Salvation !2
The Purpose of Preaching in Salvation !2
Phillip was an Evangelist Acts 21:8
And the next day we that were of Paul's company departed, and came unto Caesarea: and we entered into the house of
Philip the evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him.
One of those mentioned here Eph 4:11
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some,
evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
And because his office was one to edify the body of Christ made alive we have this Holy Narrative how the Spirit of God guided Phillip to instruct one of God's Spiritually awaken Elect Acts 8:26-35
26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.
27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,
28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.
29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
Now notice in this inspired narrative how God providentially Illustrates to us the Purpose of Preaching Christ in Salvation, for He sends a Preacher of the Gospel to a specific individual to feed him the Truth of the Gospel of Christ. First we notice an Angel of the Lord spoke to Phillip Vs 26
26 And
the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.
Then next the Spirit of God spake to him Vs 29
29
Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
Notice that the Ethiopian had a spiritual desire for the truth , for he was reading the scriptures, no doubt under the influence of the Holy Spirit Vs 30
30 And Philip ran thither to him,
and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
And then notice how willing and receptive he was of instruction he was to receive from the sent servant of God Vs 31
31 And he said,
How can I, except some man should guide me? And he
desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
That word desired is the greek word parakaleō and means
to call to one's side, call for, summon,to beg, entreat, beseech.
It also means:
to instruct, teach
The Eunuch had a desire to be instructed and to be taught and summoned Philip to his side for that Purpose, which was all in the Divine Purpose !
What we have here Illustrated is an decreed opportunity by the Wisdom of God for Phillip to Preach Christ to a Spiritually awakened and prepared sinner, spiritually prepared to receive the Message of the Cross Vs 35
35 Then Philip opened his mouth,
and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
This Narrative gives us the Divine pattern on how the Gospel is sent to them whom Christ has saved and made alive, and how its sent for the edification and bring them to Faith in the Son of God as Per Eph 4:13
13
Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
Notice what Phillip asked Acts 8:37
37 And Philip said, I
f thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
One last point. In Preaching Christ, Phillip speaks only of the things Christ did or things done to Him Vs 32-33, nothing recorded about God Loves you, Christ died for you, and you have a choice to make, for all such language is evil inventions of men and foreign to scriptural preaching !
All this means, when it comes to Preaching the Gospel in Salvation, its only for those Christ has already saved, and quickened and now need Spiritual instruction or edification !
