I would also point out that people who are addicted to drugs are not addicted to the drug so much as they are addicted to being high. That means they have very likely been taking whatever drugs they could get, and may also have been abusing alcohol as well. The people I knew that were addicted to heroin were addicted to getting high, and routinely took anything that would get them that way.
All the more reason why medical supervision is a wise precaution.
