Jesus and the Pharisees were both teachers of the law. You would think that because they both taught the law that they would be friends. Not a chance, they were bitter enemies. What is the law and what was its purpose. There is only one law it is the law of Moses. Many believe that there are two laws. The law of Moses and the law of Christ. Jesus took the law of Moses elevated it and spiritualized it. But he did not change it or create a new law. It is still the law of Moses. An example is when Jesus said, "It has been said, whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement. BUT I SAY UNTO YOU, that whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causes her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced commits adultery" Matthew 5:31,32. Jesus did not change the law, he elevated it.
Jesus also spiritualized the law. Paul wrote, "For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin" Romans 7:14. The spiritual law searches the desires and the intent of the heart, Hebrews 4:12. Some may do pretty well with the written law, but when it comes to the spiritual law that searches the desires and the intent of the heart they fail every time. This is why Paul referred to himself as "The Chief of Sinners" 1 Timothy 1:15. To keep the spiritual law all of your thoughts would have to be without sin.
The law was given to the Jews as a keeper until Jesus arrived and then it was abolished, Ephesians 2:15. The reason that it was abolished was because Christian were no longer required to live according to rules and laws. The new way of living was by Spirit and by faith. This is why Paul wrote, "The Just Shall Live By Faith" Romans 1:17. Living by laws, rules, commandments is not living by Spirit and faith, its living by religion. To live by Spirit is to live by the Gospel. In the Gospel, Jesus has perfected our humanity and has taken it to heaven. This is why Paul wrote, "For you are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God" Colossians 3:3 Paul also said, "And you are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power" Colossians 2:10. Knowledgeable Christians are no longer concerned about law keeping, or sin. They believe that they are perfect and complete "In Christ". The difference between the Christian and the religious person is that one is living by Spirit and faith, while the other is living by laws, rules and religion.
