WHO IS JESUS CHRIST?
Jesus is the second person of the Godhead, 1 John 5:15. He was in heaven with God the Father before the foundation of the world. Jesus is the physical manifestation of the invisible God. The first born of every creature, Colossians 1:15. he participated in the creation of heaven and earth and by him there was nothing created that was not created and by him all things exist, Colossians 1:15, 16, 17. Paul wrote, "In him dwells all the fulness of the Godhead" Colossians 2:9. Jesus was as much God as he was man. Only God can turn water into wine. Only God can heal the sick. Only God can forgive sins. Only God can walk on water. Only God can raise the dead.
Jesus entered into the human race through the virgin Mary. The scripture says... "She was found with child of the HOLY SPIRIT" Matthew 1:18. Jesus came into the world as God's new Adam and our new humanity, Romans 5:19. His mission was to undo or destroy what the first Adam did. The first Adam brought sin and death upon us, Romans 5:12. The new Adam (Jesus) brings righteousness and eternal life, Romans 5:18.
Jesus was also God's Holy Law manifested in human flesh. Paul wrote, "But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested" Romans 3:21. Jesus was the law of God incarnate in human flesh. We might even say that Jesus was the epitome of God's Holy Law. He was the holy, righteous, sinless Son of God. Jesus was not only God with us, he was also God for us. All that Jesus was and all that Jesus did was for us. He is our great savior and representative.
WHY GOD GAVE THE LAW TO THE JEWS
There is only one law and it is the law of Moses. The law is far more than rules and commanments. The Law is the very nature and character of God. To keep the law you would have to be Christ. This is why Paul wrote, "For by the law is the knowledge of sin" Romans 3:20 This is why Paul wrote, "There is none righteous, no, not one" Romans 3:10 No one measures up to God's standards. The law was given to the Jews to keep them intack until Christ arrived, otherwise there probably would have been another Sodom and Gomorrah that would have perverted the line from which Christ would have come. After the arrival of Jesus the Jews were no longer required to live according to law. They were required to live by the Holy Spirit, Romans 7:6.
Anything in the Bible that tells us to do something or not to do something is Law. The law was given to the Jews as their keeper, just as the Holy Spirit is given to Christians as their keeper. Jesus took the law of Moses and elevated it, he did not change it as some believe. Not only did he elevate it, he spiritualized it. Now the law is not only written, it is spiritual, it searches the desires and the intent of the heart, Hebrews 4:12. To keep the spiritual law all of your thoughts would have to be pure and without sin.
The Pharisees took the Ten Commandments and the ordinances in the Old Testament and came up with over 600 laws and rules for holy living. They called it the Torah. The thought that by keeping the law they would be justified. Some of them even tithed down to the mint in their gardens, Matthew 23:23. Jesus rebuked them sharply and refered to them as snakes, hypocrites, blind guides, fools, etc.
God never intended for his people to live according to laws and rules, this is why Paul said, "The just shall live by faith" Romans 1:17 and not by rules, laws or religion. A good Son does not need instructions on how to please his Father. He knows what is right and what is wrong and he does not do anything that would not please his Father. Jesus said, "I always do those things that please him" John 8:29. Paul said that the law is for sinners, the lawless, the ungodly, the disobedient, murderers, etc, 1 Timothy 1:9, 10, 11. If anything there fits you, then the law is for you.
Paul said that the law made him want to sin, Romans 7:7-12. If you want to make people sin, then tell them not to sin? God told Adam and Eve not to eat of the tree in the midst of the garden. Before that they probably never even thought about the tree, but now God said don't even touch it. I would bet my last dollar that they both ran into the midst of the garden to take a look at it. Eve said that the tree was pleasant to the eyes. A tree that would make one wise and was good for food, Genesis 3:6.
THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit convicts the Christian of sin and righteousness, John 16:8. If a Christian is living in sin the Holy Spirit will convict them of that and will hopefully bring them out of it. The purpose of the Holy Spirit is to make us witnesses for Christ and his Gospel. You cannot be an effective witness for Christ and his Gospel if you are not living the Christian life. There is no greater witness for Christ than the changed life. You cannot call yourself a Christian and continue to live like the devil. The Holy Spirit will never lead someone into sin. His purpose is to magnify Christ and his Gospel. It is NOT the work of the Holy Spirit to save us, that is Christ's work. The Holy Spirit is given to magnify the work of Christ and to make us witnesses for Christ and his Gospel, John 15:26.
