Is There a Queen in the Kingdom of Heaven? PART ONE

By Tim Staples - source link

(quoted with permission)

Pope Pius XII effectively summarized the core reasons Christians ought to honor Mary with the title of Queen of Heaven and Earth:

According to ancient tradition and the sacred liturgy the main principle on which the royal dignity of Mary rests is without doubt her divine motherhood. In holy writ, concerning the son whom Mary will conceive, we read this sentence: “He shall be called the son of the most high, and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father, and he shall reign in the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end,” and in addition Mary is called “Mother of the Lord,” from this it is easily concluded that she is a queen, since she bore a son who, at the very moment of his conception, because of the hypostatic union of the human nature with the Word, was also as man, king and lord of all things. So with complete justice St. John Damascene could write: “When she became mother of the creator, she truly became queen of every creature.” Likewise, it can be said that the heavenly voice of the Archangel Gabriel was the first to proclaim Mary’s royal office (Ad Caeli Reginam, 34).

In a future blog post, I will give more positive reasons for faith in Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth, but many Protestants I speak to cannot get past one biblical text from the Old Testament that casts a shadow over this topic like none other. In Roman Catholics and Evangelicals—Agreements and Differences, Norman Geisler and Ralph MacKenzie present that text along with their commentary that represents the misguided faith of millions. And that text is Jeremiah 7:18:

Do you not see what they are doing in the streets of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? The children gather wood, the fathers kindle fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven; and they pour out drink offerings to other gods, to provoke me to anger.

Geisler and MacKenzie comment:
To call Mary “Queen of Heaven,” knowing that this very phrase comes from an old pagan idolatrous cult condemned in the Bible (cf. Jer. 7:18), only invites the charge of Mariolatry. And Mariolatry is idolatry (p. 322).

I can certainly sympathize with their thinking here. I once thought the same. But the truth is: this text has absolutely nothing to do with the Blessed Mother as Queen of Heaven for at least three reasons:

  1. Jeremiah here condemns the adoration of the Mesopotamian goddess Astarte (see Raymond Brown, S.S., Joseph Fitzmeyer, S.J., Roland E. Murphy, editors, The Jerome Biblical Commentary, Prentice-Hall, Inc., Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, 1968, p. 310). She is in no way related to Mary. In fact, “she” did not and does not exist in reality. Mary, on the other hand, was a real historical person who was—and is—a queen by virtue of the fact that her son was—and is—the king.
  2. Jeremiah condemned offering sacrifice to “the queen of heaven.” In Scripture, we have many examples of the proper way we should honor great members of the kingdom of God. We give “double honor” to “elders who rule well” in the Church (1 Tim. 5:17). St. Paul tells us we should “esteem very highly” those who are “over [us] in the Lord” (1 Thess. 5:12-13). We sing praises to great members of the family of God who have gone before us (Psalm 45:17). We bow down to them with reverence (1 Kings 2:19). We carry out the work of the Lord in their names (Matt. 10:40-42, DRV), and more. But there is one thing we ought never to do: offer sacrifice to them. Offering sacrifice is tantamount to the adoration that is due God alone. And this is precisely what Jeremiah was condemning. The Catholic Church does not teach—and has never taught—that we should adore Mary (see CCC 2110-2114; Lumen Gentium 66-67; CCC 971). Catholics offer sacrifice exclusively to God.
  3. To the Evangelical and Fundamentalist, the mere fact that worshipping someone called “queen of heaven” is condemned in Jeremiah 7 eliminates the possibility of Mary being the true Queen of Heaven and Earth. This simply does not follow. The existence of a counterfeit queen does not mean there can’t be an authentic one. This reasoning followed to its logical end would lead to abandoning the entire Christian Faith! We could not have a Bible because Hinduism, Islam, and many other false religions have “holy books.” We could not call Jesus Son of God because Zeus and Hera had Apollo, Isis and Osiris had Horus, etc. The fact that there was a false “queen of heaven” worshipped in ancient Mesopotamia does not negate the reality of the true queen who is honored as such in the kingdom of God.

No there isn't, because Kings and Queens were NOT in the original plan for mankind. Throughout all of Jewish History, the people were ruled by prophets and holy men. The Kings of Israel came about due to the peoples jealousy of their neighbors and complaining... so God cursed the people with a King.

Do you think Heaven is cursed?.. because if it has a Queen.. it is cursed!

Really, attributing Mary as Queen of Heaven is probably one of the most stupid things the RCC has ever proclaimed.. its asinine.

We are all equal in heaven as humans, sons of adam, there is no hierarchy (maybe that is why the RCC pushes it.. to add more legitimacy to its hierarchy).. we will walk and talk with all the prophets, possibly Mary and everyone else that made it into heaven as equals... The only person we will ever bow to is God... our creator.

In his attempt to unify pagan Rome with Christian Rome, Emperor Constantine approved of the adoption of pagan holidays and deities into the Roman Catholic State Religion. This is clearly reflected in the names of the days of the week and names of the months and the dates upon which "Christian" holidays are celebrated. Semiramis, who was both Nimrod's wife and Tammuz' mother, was worshiped as the "mother of god", and this figure was replaced by "Mary, the "mother of God". And so, Constantine pacified both Roman pagan and "Christian". Conversion to "Christianity" was optional and accomplished by sprinkling with "holy water".

Even today, "local pagan deities" are adopted and integrated into the "local" Catholic church.

Yes, there is. Your answer demonstrates an utter ignorance about Jesus, Jesus as "Son of David", and of the Family of God.

Jesus being a son of David was nothing more than a fulfilling of a promise.. it speaks nothing about God's want for royalty in his family.

Its only references and mentions in scripture were for the benefit of human kind, because it is something they understood since most lived under the jackboot of royalty.

Jeremiah said, "The women also said, 'And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, did we make cakes for her, to worship her, and pour out drink offerings to her without our husbands' permission?'"

Israel worshiped the queen of heaven, it's nice the Catholics continue the tradition.

Maybe you should read that entire passage... the penalties for it were quite harsh on the Jewish people!

Is There a Queen in the Kingdom of Heaven?

Good question! Was Freddie Mercury a Roman Catholic? I know he was a homosexual, though never heard it reported he was diddling choir boys. But maybe...

He was Zoroastrian.

Yes, but according to Francis, in his preeminent infallibility amoung men, isn't it all the same God, whether Allah or a plastic SpongeBob, Kenneth Copeland or Zoraster? Though I can't say I know much about Zoraster. Was he a homo who made, say, cupcakes to the queen of heaven, to have relevance in this discussion?

Were Adam and Eve a King and Queen?

I rest my case........

What the..... ..Are you insane?

Look: in the Old Testament monarchy the Queen of the Davidic Kingdom was the Queen Mother. The Kings, for reasons of state and human weakness, had many wives, none of whom fittingly could be called Queen. That honor was reserved for the mother of the King, whose authority far surpassed the many "queens" married to the king. We see this in the history of Middle Eastern nations of the time. We specifically see this is the role Bathsheba played with respect to King Solomon and the occasions when the Queen Mother acted as regent on behalf of juvenile successors to the throne. Remember, the Jews wanted a king in order to be “like all nations”. Thus, following the models of the neighboring lands, they established a dynasty, a legal system, a royal court – and a queen mother. She was the “Gebirah” – Great Lady.

The role of the Queen Mother, therefore, is a prophetic type of the Kingdom role of Mary, just as the role of the Davidic King is a prophetic type of the Kingdom role of Jesus. Jesus inherited the Kingdom promised to David, who was told that one of his descendants would rule forever. The angel Gabriel revealed this fact to Mary at her Annunciation: “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." (Luke 1:31-33)

Aside from the prophetic types present in the Kingdom of Judah, there is also the text of Psalm 45, which when speaking of the Kingdom of God also speaks of its Queen.

[6] Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre. [7] Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. [8] All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad. [9] Kings' daughters were among thy honourable women: upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir. [10] Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father's house; [11] So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him. (Psalm 45:6-11, KJV)

That Kingdom ruled by God is the same as the Kingdom ruled eternally by the Son of David. It is not an earthly kingdom (though it is present on earth in the Church) but rather a heavenly kingdom, the Kingdom of God. The Queen of that Kingdom is the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of the Lord God Jesus Christ. The Jews who knew Jesus would have understood this perfectly. Jesus is “Son of David” who would inherit the throne of David. And who would inherit the throne at his side, the seat of the Queen Mother? His mother, of course.

Israel Asks for a King
8 When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as Israel’s leaders.[a] 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah, and they served at Beersheba. 3 But his sons did not follow his ways. They turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice.

4 So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.”

6 But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”

10 Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots. 12 Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[c] and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.”

19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”

21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the Lord. 22 The Lord answered, “Listen to them and give them a king.”

Then Samuel said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own town.”

Kings and Queens are not in God's design... they arose because of stiff necked people like you envying their neighbor.. and a King was given to Israel as a curse.

God's design is a theocracy... not a monarchy and all its trappings.

If you notice, even after God appointed Saul, the Levites continued, and the King was technically subordinate to it.

Do you think Heaven is bound to mans corrupt desires here on earth that resulted in God appointing a King for Israel? NO WAY!

The Kingdom of Heaven is a theocracy to God the Father.. and he has no queen.

In a way, I find the RCC not much different than the Jews that grumbled for a monarchy... so it appointed Mary as their queen.

Pretty funny, and tragic at the same time!

Is there no lesson to be learned from the passage about how God thinks about royalty?

Then why didn't God appoint Israel a King as soon as they took possession of the promised land? Instead, it happened many centuries later!

Your wholesale swallowing of RCC's insane reasoning is getting to my brain.... do you even have a brain of your own?

The entire royalty thing is man's invention in direct opposition to God's plans!

The Virgin Mary

QUEEN OF HEAVEN
By Kathy Schley
Source: Queen of Heaven

The Virgin Mary's title, "Queen of Heaven," is attacked by many non-Catholics and accused of idolatry, paganism and heresy. However, according to the Catholic Church, the Virgin Mary is indeed QUEEN OF HEAVEN. Her title is supported in Scripture and in history. If we look at Scripture and in history, the mother (not wife) of the king in the Davidic kingdom is "Queen." For example, Prophet Jeremiah calls the king's mother, Queen. "Say to the king and the queen mother: "Take a lowly seat, for your beautiful crown has come down from your head." (Jeremiah 13:18) King Solomon's mother is "Queen Bathsheba" who sat on King Solomon's right. Note in Scripture King Solomon rose at her entrance and bowed down to her? "So Bathsheba went to King Solomon, to speak to him on behalf of Adonijah. And the king rose to meet her, and bowed down to her; then he sat on his throne, and had a seat brought for the king's mother; and she sat on his right." (1Kings 2:19) We also see homage given to the Virgin Mary by Angel Gabriel at the Annunciation when he appears to Mary and also tells her that her Son, Jesus, will be given the throne of his father, David. (Luke 1:32) Jesus, who is born in the Davidic line (the House of David) is called "King of kings." (Timothy 6:15, Revelation 19:16) Jesus' title, King of kings, would make His Mother, Mary, "Queen of queens."This is Jewish history and the Jewish custom of Israel. We not only have Jewish history, but Scriptural support to the Virgin Mary becoming "Queen" through her Son, Jesus', Kingship, King of kings, Ruler from the Kingdom of the Heavenly Jerusalem.

God also says we will have a Queen. "...daughters of kings are among your ladies of honor; at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir...the people of Tyre will sue your favor with gifts, the richest of the people with all kinds of wealth [spoken to the queen]...I will cause your name to be celebrated in all generations; therefore the peoples will praise you for ever and ever [spoken to the queen]. (Psalms 45:9,12,17) All generations? Who would this queen be? The Virgin Mary herself saidall generations will call her "blessed." (Luke 1:48) In Revelation, Mary is the woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a "crown" of twelve stars. (Revelation 12:1).

One of the arguments against the Virgin Mary's title, Queen of Heaven, is, the title was used for a pagan goddess. In the Prophet Jeremiah we read, "The children gather wood, the fathers kindle fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven,..." (Jeremiah 7:18) Therefore, the Virgin Mary's title, Queen of Heaven, would also imply she too is a "pagan goddness." However, Jesus' title, King of kings, was used for the pagan Nebuchadnezzer. "You, O King, the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory,..." (Daniel 2:37) Using this same logic, Jesus' title, King of kings, would also imply that Jesus is a pagan King. But of course these same non-Catholic Christians wouldn't debunk Jesus over a title that was used for a pagan. So why debunk the Virgin Mary who was given the title fitting for her and used for a pagan goddess?

We also see intercession to King Solomon from his mother, Queen Bathsheba. "Then she said, "I have one small request to make of you; do not refuse me." And the king said to her, "Make your request, my mother; for I will not refuse you." (1Kings 2:20) The intercession shows the queen possesses power in the royalty of her son's kingship. We also see in the first Miracle of Jesus at the Wedding Feast of Cana the intercession of Mary (the Mother of Jesus). She seeks help from Her Son, Jesus, and tells Him,"They have no wine." And then tells the guest, "Do whatever he tells you." (John 2:1-11) Jesus being a guest like any other guest would have allowed this crisis of running out of wine to happen. After all, Jesus is only a guest and not the person that anyone would turn to for help. His ministry has not yet begun before the crisis at Cana. But His Mother knew Her Son could help and interceded by making a request to Her Son on behalf of the peoples needs and wants. Mary's intercession for the people that began at the Wedding Feast at Cana (the beginning of Jesus' Ministry and the changing of their roles) continues today. Mary, as Queen of Heaven, continues to intercede on our behalf.

Thanks for letting everyone know that you and the author are idiots.

It just assumes that God supports the idea of royalty... yet he despises it and views it as a curse.

People that want to keep their positions hate what scripture says. Even King James created his translation to preserve the false idea of the 'divine right of Kings'.. which the Geneva Bible had rightly discredited in its margins.

With the RCC's legacy of empire building and being a maker of human kings and queens, it makes sense that it extend this absurd idea to heaven.

Please don't talk to me anymore. Your extreme ignorance is starting to upset my digestive system.

Seriously, I composed this for, partially, that very reason, before your post. I realize you're not likely to listen to a word of this, but, like the hell threads, I sometimes feel the need to try and clarify the situation, take it or leave it. And I wrote this, before your stomach complaint, mind you.

"This isn't to gratuitously interrupt all the Roman Catholic ad threads and spam, but a couple observations. All that copying and pasting, effectively plagiarism of Catholic websites for propaganda purposes, is so out of place! A person can Google Roman Catholic stuff and get an endless array of blather that never ends, if a person wants to see that. To be honest, I'd not read that stuff for being just obvious Roman Catholic propaganda, but much less in fonts than are as small as the theological basis of the claims.

Secondly, and most important: don't you think it's about time you guys got over the Ninety-five Theses being posted? Or people like William Tyndale? A person could maybe remotely see how, within a hundred years of murdering somebody, you guys felt the need to dig up bodies and stomp on what's left of them, which, sorry, but that's, still, so psycho juvenile and senseless, but it's been pretty near 500 years since Luther. Isn't it about time to get over it? I'm telling you the truth: the world has moved on. We're not talking about you in Protestant churches. We don't attend your masses, and you don't attend our services. We're called Protestants, but I'm not protesting anything. Luther had to do that, but you've never been relevant in my life. You flatter yourself we're actually protesting you. Can't you see how much you're out of sight and out of mind?

Again, honestly, I've not heard anybody wringing their hands over Roman Catholicism for years, well, never, except on some silly website. We teach the Bible, talk about the Lord Jesus and the apostles, doctrines of scripture, take communion with never a thought as to cannibalism. It's hard to hear, but it's the truth: you're irrelevant, for centuries now defanged. We have our Bibles and our faith in that gospel. You're just spamming all these threads that are like ads for dog food, to people who don't have a pet. You're trying to reassert the Dark Ages, often clearly expressing that disdain and anger over people who hold to the church of the Bible, the gospel of Jesus Christ and the apostles, which is the only Christian faith, obviously. For your own mental well being, you need to get over the Reformation at some point. Can't you see 500 years is too long to be angry, exercised and mourning anything? Would you be interested, if I made dozens of threads about Civil War reenactments, and that wasn't even 200 years ago, see what I mean?

What if most people are not taking you seriously as you take yourselves? What if most everybody isn't even reading all that small print? Sorry, but I don't. To be honest, your threads are merely a matter of having a little fun with it, as I see it, but not ever part of the real life Christian discourse. I can't recall the last mention, in passing, of Roman Catholics in my congregation. You could rant for 500 more years, and I know I'll never be interested in Roman Catholicism, nor anybody I've ever known of like Holy Bible faith. So what are you, in fact, accomplishing, spamming Roman Catholic threads? I see a thread list that gets really junked up, that's all. You're simply presenting the Dark Ages party line everybody has heard, over and over, from you guys, all the very talking points, the false doctrines of men, the reasons we reject Roman Catholicism, in the first place. Does at least this sink in?

So, all that anger and crusading you think you're up to is more Don Quixote. And spending your life all exercised you no longer control everybody, well, you're just blowing a gasket over delusions of faded glory, long gone. That's just very unhealthy. Get over it. Actually try expressing something solely Christ centered, for once, instead of trying to sell the Roman cult to unwilling customers. All the Roman church this, Roman church that is, frankly, a real bore."

Scripture tells us who is the heavenly king of Israel.
Scripture makes no mention of a heavenly queen of Israel.

Scripture tells us of the heavenly King coming to earth to rule on David's throne.
Scripture makes no mention of a heavenly queen coming to earth, or ruling from any throne at all.
In fact scripture makes no mention of a heavenly queen that does anything for anyone.
