I am not a Hindu, but Hinduism was established by Sri Adi Sankara in the year 482 B.C. and has the distinction of an unbroken line of 70 Acharyas (spiritual leaders). On many web sites, aspects of Sanatana Dharma, Hinduism and Advaita Vedanta are presented. The Advaita Vedanta presents God and the soul as being the same; they are never seperated. The same Supreme Self acts as individual souls without undergoing any change or division. Not being a Hindu, I cannot offer further commentary on this. Dating back to around 3000 BC, careful burials during the Egyptian Predynastic period imply that the people of this time believed in some form of an afterlife, therefore believed they had a soul, and seem to have believed that their soul was connected to God. The concept of the Oneness of God/Soul is not a new one. But it is mine.
