How do you "put to death....your earthly nature" (Colossians 3:5)

"Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry" (Colossians 3:5).

Commentaries I have read describe the earthly nature. But not much on how to put it to death.

Try this:

Rom 8:1-4 (AKJV/PCE)
(8:1) [There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (8:2) For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. (8:3) For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: (8:4) That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

In the KJV of the bible it is written..."Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:" (Col 3:5)
Mortify means "keep dead".
These things were all crucified with Christ, (Gal 5:24), at our water baptism into His death and burial so we could be raised with Him to walk in newness of life. (Rom 6:3-7)
Your version of the bible makes it look like Gal 5:24 and Romans 6:3-7 never happened.

Where are you getting this "definition"?

This is from Strong's:

G3499 νεκρόω nekroo (ne-kro'-ō) v.
1. to deaden.
2. (figuratively) to subdue.
[from G3498]
KJV: be dead, mortify
Root(s): G3498

My guess is that you got that definition from the same place that you're getting your bad doctrine.
How can you "deaden" something that is dead already?
It is written..."And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts." (Gal 5:24)

To my reading it appears that Paul answers your question himself right in Colossians 3-4:

3:1 ... seek those things which are above ... 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

3:9 Lie not one to another ... 12 Put on ... bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

3:15 ... let the peace of God rule in your hearts ... and be ye thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

3:18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. 20 Children, obey your parents in all things ... 21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger ...

3:22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: 23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;

4:1 Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal ... 2 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving ...

4:5 Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. 6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

There's a lot in there that's specific, to help us understand the words that aren't as clear.

LOL... How can you "keep dead" something that is dead already?
You're a hoot!
It is written..."And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts." (Gal 5:24)
Great. It does NOT mean that believers in Christ become instantly sinless. It does mean that we are dead IN CHRIST, Who is the sinless one.

You don't understand it?
Don't give life to something that is dead.

The sinless part occurs when one is washed of past sin by the blood of Christ. (1 John 1:7)
We can maintain that obedient position by keeping the fleshly mind, with the vile affections and lusts, dead. (Gal 5:24)
It does mean that we are dead IN CHRIST, Who is the sinless one.
As there can be no sin "in Christ", (1 John 1;5), if we are to remain "in Christ", we must be without sin.

Of course I do, you childish brat.
Don't give life to something that is dead.
You claimed that the word translated "mortify" means "keep dead". That is ridiculous.

We do not become sinless. Christ is the only sinless one. Paul (along with Peter, John, etc) admonished Christians not to sin. If we were "sinless" after we join the body of Christ, that would make no sense.
As there can be no sin "in Christ", (1 John 1;5), if we are to remain "in Christ", we must be without sin.
That is heretical and proves that you remain unsaved and condemned.
