1 Jn 2:1-2
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
Most people in religion dont understand this truth of Jesus being the propitiation for our sins. Its obvious one doesnt understand it when they come to the false conclusion that all men without exception is meant, to include people who are under Gods penal vindictive wrath. Thats the wrath Jesus refers to here Jn 3:36
36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
If the wrath of God is presently abiding on any individual, its simply impossible for that one to be included in the whole world of 1 Jn 2:2. This is true because those ones belonging to that whole world, Christ has been and is[present tense] continually their propitiation. This means He propitiated God’s wrath against us by bearing God’s righteous indignation and wrath against our sins 1 Jn 4:10
10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Christ is continually being their satisfaction before the Law and Justice of God for their sins. Yes even for their sins if unbelief. For its not belief in Christ that satisfied, propitiated Gods punitive wrath, but the blood of Jesus Christ the Righteous. We fall into grave error when we trust that it was ones act of believing that propitiated Gods wrath instead of Christs blood. Then we give mans act credit for doing something that Christ and His Blood should have the Glory of doing, accomplishing.
So its Christs Death, Blood alone that actually propitiated Gods wrath and completed the atonement. On the cross, Jesus turned away God’s punitive wrath against us for ever, even when we were in unbelief, for our unbelief has nothing to do with what Christ blood accomplished for us.
Now false religion says that God’s wrath is only potentially turned away from all men so that all can be saved if they, by an act of their “free will,” choose or accept Jesus.!
