Yes, a handgun here would only be good for fighting your way to a rifle.
I'm not allowed as a Bostonian to carry my rifle, so if SHTF (skubalon hits the fan) I'm going to need to go get it. That is the only reason for the handgun if SHTF (skubalon hits the fan). I may and I may not need to use it, but if I do, it'll be because I need to blast my way to my rifle. If I have to shoot through a situation and hightail it with bad guys chasing me, I better be able to grab the rifle and start blasting right away with it, so I also need to think about having the rifle cocked and locked, just like the handgun is.
I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn at 100 yards with a 1911 (I'm exaggerating, but the bullet at 100 yards isn't going that fast either, it's more of a lob than a shot at that distance).
My point exactly. I can't hit anybody reliably at even as short a distance as 100 yards. I could conceivably provide covering fire with it if it's not too far away, I haven't tested how far I can lob .45 Auto bullets at the range, only at c. 100-120 yards, and at that distance, these 230-grain rounds are lobs, it takes a noticeable duration between the discharge and the puff from the thud into the berm.
I saw Shawn Ryan talk about firearms training as a Navy SEAL. He said they learn first how to use a handgun, because it's the hardest gun to learn. After that, long guns are easy. It was interesting.

He shoots better than me, and doesn't explain it good enough, which seems to be common.
I like Jerry Miculek. See below.
... A really tight grip is the most important thing. ... The most important thing in shooting a pistol is very tight grip. Don't let it move around in your hand.
I teach my kids to prepare for someone whacking the muzzle with a rubber mallet in anticipation. That and watch Jerry Miculek, whose content you brought to my attention years ago.
I don't carry the 92FS. And I am going to post a few videos from an expert on it. You might want it for the SHTF series. ...

In 99% of cases, a .22 will get the job done when it comes to getting the typical bad guy to stop doing whatever it is he's attempting to do ...
Even if SHTF—you need to fight your way to your rifle. A .22 LR could very easily be more than enough. Point is if SHTF get to your rifle. I'm a Bostonian so I'm not allowed to carry my rifle, if SHTF I have to fight my way to my rifle and that's what the handgun is for. .22 LR, .40 SW, 10 mm, 9mm, .45 Auto, .380 ACP, 5.7 Sig, .380 Special, .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, .50 AE, .500 SW, etc., etc.
10mm or .44 magnum makes sense for defense against bears and basically nothing else.
With a solid copper bullet especially.
They're just too much gun for the vast majority of self-defense situations.
.45 ACP is fine if that's what you like but you can get virtually all the same work done with a .40 or even 9mm if you select the right ammo.
What's your opinion on ball target ammo, if you're strapped for cash which standard ball ammo would be best? .40 SW, 9 mm or .45 ACP? (These are the most economical ball rounds.)

... Which will never come.
Annexing Greenland, Canada, controlling Venezuela and Panama, getting out of any treaties where we're subordinate, will all go a long way toward that being true.
