19th: several segues have been alternating either the overlap of audio or image; nice to see the latest techniques compared to some of the editing lately with newer editing.

30st: I'm not sure if the buddy Neville is a symbol of Satan yet--I missed some minutes.

Not following most of the dialogue with the captor...

71st:
haven't decided if the criminal trio is borderline comic effect.

possibly suffers from a loss of center. The impact of the father was the central theme for a third, but hasn't been in the picture since.

81st: that's a lot of running for an asthmatic in a panic

unusually nice dramatic orchestration throughout.

Final:
The main gets his life back after an interesting SFX exorcism of Neville. The central idea remained elusive, as difficult as the rationales given by the criminals for their pasts and actions. The poor quality fathering was not addressed at the end, so that loop wasn't closed. The 'loop' the writer wanted to close was the plague of doubt and despair spouted by Neville's steady stream of lies, and that was broken, but we can't say exactly why. The supportive woman friend's urging certainly helped, but there was a loss of what was really going on inside the main's head.

Time for short films? Nope, it's music.

late start for me. The production values are very high. It always helps to have the British accent in the house. The setting is English--Hamsted.

the position of the writing seems to be that the particulars of the Hassidic Jew is as vital as evangelical faith

53rd:
That's probably the most unusual main character hair style to be seen in years!

61st:
is there a magical feature to the rituals, something to think about?

now we are being set up for the redemptive power of Judaism. "These holy men have enough merit and holiness to nullify a negative decree" in life.

65th:
overall production-wise: compelling story, camera angles, music--always nice to hear orchestrals in a drama. It is never quite the same without them.

the music just went upbeat as soon as the father makes the 'pilgrimage' to Israel, to the special rabbi.

70th:
the background of the Kalman's--the host family--being inside Judaism, means that the script is directed toward those in Judaism today. It seemed to be meant for those outside 20mins ago.

difficult audio there with the special rabbi, but it seems to be a preparation for the worst. The term for the special rabbi was 'tzedeki'. Like 'zedek.'

90th:
the upshot of the seder was to leave behind a personal bondage.

92nd:
a very moving coincidence between the two women, one pregnant widow and one dying of cancer.

that conversation (above) hinged on a rule in Judaism about whether the body of a presumed deceased spouse has been located and how that affects the life of the surviving spouse.

104th:
that's a very moving death scene, pulling all the dying and remarrying issues together. It was hard to get the audio of Dovid about the example to thousands of lost Jewish souls.

Overall, final:
Kuddos for taking on the tricky combination of a compelling story with the amount of cultural luggage that is necessary.

The small percent of 'pious' Jews in modern Israel (8%) may explain the above and make it more of an outreach that direction than most of us realize.

On segues and unit completion, there seemed to be some trimming and clipping that did not quite allow the emotion of the passage to fill out. Photo montages of reaction shots, more orchestrals, etc. would have been an improvement on this aspect.

Messianics: we must see that nothing here moved toward Christian or Messianic faith. The purpose of the script was to wake up those who were secular toward a more meaningful practice of Judaism. A significant part of that Judaism was a personally involved God but not Christ.

ANOTHER PERFECT STRANGER
2007

A teenager bonds with an unlikely friend who shares her disdain for religion.
A Jefferson Moore production.

Moore is back with more. See notes on a series of 3 by and with him above. He is usually efficient with material, able to probe deep questions and still have a sense of humor something like THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY.

4:30 start today, 7:30 EST.

No live posting next week.

Intro (started at 4:35):
well it's way different from expected! Dramatic music, Jesus in a modern suit, having a nearly romantic dinner, small screen?. Quite a ways off from the great 3 recent films.

17th:
cliches are awful--another religion vs relationship question as though everyone would know or want to go at it that way.
There is a lot of airplane noise!

24th:
It's getting a bit awkward with him calling the weird restaurant dinner 'religion.' If that was really what the mom based her faith on, her faith is vapid.

42nd:
Proof that you don't have to have interesting action to have a good movie, but your characters have to ask eachother 'who-what-where-why' questions.
