Three items that I have found to be very accurate and useful when it comes to choosing Bible commentaries that I want to pass along:

A Layman's Commentary Guide:

Commentaries for the Whole Bible:

If you want an inexpensive commentary on the entire Bible in a single volume, you should check out the New Living Translation (NLT) of the Bible. Just use any NLT translation dated from 2007 or 2015 as earlier translation were nothing but poor paraphrases. Even with the updates, the NLT still reads like a commentary to me, so it is a quick and easy means of having an alternative reading of a passage from your favorite bible translation.
