Parallel thinking: Flat Earth and Young Earth Creationists

Nearly everybody is happy to jump on the few flat-earthers that we have here (Dave is the prime example). Some of those who attack the FE idea are Young Earth Creationists, who somehow miss that they are behaving in similar way. For example, how to deal with facts. Let's say you present Dave...

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

DAVE! We are talking about simple relativity. Like two cars travelling at a velocity RELATTIVE to each other. We are not, I repeat not, talking about Einsteins theory of relativity. This has already been pointed out to you in this thread. Please read what others bother to post. Thank you.

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

A similar topic came up in this thread, post 3740. I don't have a huge interest in discussing it further, unless somebody else wants to. By the way,I recall getting a warning for even mentioning this idea in the past.

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

There is a parallel between Flat Earth arguments and Young Earth Creationist arguments. Specifically, the avoidance of dealing with inconvenient facts. YEC's don't like to hear this, but there is a parallel. I do not intend to derail this thread. If anybody wants to start a YEC vs. FE...

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

Here Dave is almost, just almost, getting the idea of how one needs a reference point when measuring velocity. By the way, when he disappears for a week or so, is it because he's busy, or he's working on a his answers, or trying to find more youtube videos?

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

I agree. He is not dumb- he just insists that reality is different than, well, reality. My guess is that he has a fixed (and wrong) conception of what the Bible says about reality, and is horribly afraid that if he admits, for example, that the earth moves, all his faith will go down the drain.

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

The box is an "immovable point" even if it is on a rocket flying through space? Think before you answer.

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

Dave, just answer the questions- fill in the blanks. You won't learn anything by running away from questions.

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

Dave, when it comes to things scientific, you ARE ignorant. Yes, it is obvious. And no, no hidden cards will help you here. I think that the idea of velocity being relative spooks you, because it sounds like the Theory of Relativity, which you view as fake and evil and anti-Bible. But it is...

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

Dave, you are not dumb. You are ignorant. But it is an ignorance that you apparently do not want to fix out of fear that it will weaken your faith. The reason so many people are exasperated with you is that you appear to be fairly intelligent, yet insist on maintaining ideas that are both wrong...

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

"fix" is correct- but the choice of "fixed" point is arbitrary, there is nothing absolute about it. "Immovable" is false. There is no need for anything to be "immovable". Dave, they have moved 120 miles relative to each other in 1 hour. That is what "120 miles per hour" means! they are...

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

Dave, you are talking about relative velocities, and getting two things wrong: 1. You do not need a 'fixed' point in order to measure velocity 2. This is basic classical physics, that was known centuries before Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Now, read again slowly: 1. You do not need a...

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

Yet you can go from one car to the other without any problem. The cars are stationary relative to each other. Again: All of this has nothing at all to do with the Theory of Relativity! And yes- you insist on being dumb. Why is beyond me.

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

I am saying it is correct! The two cars, in one hour, travel 120 miles relative to each other. This means that they are travelling 120 miles per hour relative to each other, though each one is only travelling at 60 mph relative to the road.

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

Relative to each other they traveled at 120 mph.

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

Take two cars, 120 mile apart. they drive towards each other, each one travelling at 60 mph relative to the earth. How long will it take before the two cars meet?
  17. C

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

When people speak of the velocity of cars on earth, they are usually speaking from the viewpoint of someone who is stationary to the earth, unless otherwise specified. Dave, I am not going to waste even another minute on your endless videos. You do not understand the simplest things in...

The earth is flat and we never went to the moon--Part II

Dave, You are simply wrong, on two points: 1. Each car is travelling at 60 mph, from the viewpoint of somebody standing on the ground. Each car is travelling at 120 mph, from the viewpoint of a driver in the other car. This really is grade school stuff. 2. The two cars are travelling 120 mph...
