    He may not have passed that note. He should have been challenged at the counter, or at least while still in the shop. Some shops get rid of bad notes that they previously accepted, in this way. Some shops actually distribute bad notes in change so that they can get good notes in return for them...

    .... and over an offence which I don't think he even committed! If ever you get stopped OUTSIDE a shop and accused of passing a forged note, insist that you payred with legal tender, get a solicitor! Ask 'why did the shop let you leave before challenging you?' Some shops get rid of bad notes...
